This collection focuses on generations of early women historians, seeking to identify the intellectual milieu and professional realities that framed their lives. It moves beyond treating them as simply individuals and looks to the social and intellectual forces that encouraged them to study history and, at the same time, would often limit the reach and define the nature of their study. This collection of essays speaks to female practitioners of history over the past four centuries that published original histories, some within a university setting and some outside. By analysing the values these early women scholars faced, readers can understand the broader social values that led women historians to exist as a unit apart from the career path of their male colleagues.

“This is the first book to show the sweeping change among American women in this century, and to do so in an irresistible, intimate, and popular way.” —Gloria Steinem The women in this landmark work of oral history are from diverse ethnic, geographic, and social backgrounds, and they tell stories about all aspects of their lives, from their professional and romantic experiences to sex discrimination and their own realized or unrealized aspirations. As in the best oral history, the stories these women candidly tell are vivid and often poignantly detailed. We hear accounts of rural, chore-filled childhoods at the beginning of the century, of contemporary teens without curfews, of dates that began with a chat with father in the parlor, of the sexual liberation of the 1960s, of women who worked in factories during World War II, of those who were pioneers in their professions, and of women who today struggle heroically to balance the demands of marriage or single mothering, work, and children. Sweeping in scope, and yet rooted in the details, emotions, and dilemmas of everyday life, the journey women have traveled over the century here becomes all the more dramatic, the transformation they have undergone all the more remarkable. Generations is a celebration of this transformation in all its complexity, an embracing and vibrant family scrapbook that belongs to all American women. “Generations tells us both how far we have come and how far we have yet to go.” —Ruth Sidel, author of Unsung Heroines: Single Mothers and the American Dream

Indian, European, and African women of seventeenth and eighteenth-century America were defenders of their native land, pioneers on the frontier, willing immigrants, and courageous slaves. They were also - as traditional scholarship tends to omit - as important as men in shaping American culture and history. This remarkable work is a gripping portrait that gives early-American women their proper place in history.

In African Women, bestselling author Mark Mathabane presents the deeply moving, often shocking, but ultimately inspiring stories of his grandmother, mother and sister. Coping with abuse, gambling, drunkenness and infidelity from the men they love or have been forced to marry, all three women defy African tradition, and the poverty and violence of life in a modern urban society, to make fulfilling lives for themselves and those they love in the belly of the apartheid beast in South Africa."A powerful piece of work...It is a pleasure to finally have a book concerned with issues of dire importance to women written sensitively by a man." -- Washington Post "A finely crafted book that makes it easier to understand how the vicious cycles of abuse and oppression of women snowballed under apartheid." -- Christian Science Monitor"Mathabane shifts his attention from the evils of racism to what may be the still more insidious and intractable problems of sexism as he describes in spare, moving prose the lives of his sister, mother and grandmother." -- The Wall Street Journal

This book argues for the importance of age as a source of diversity and difference amongst women. It compares three generations of women’s accounts of a range of gender issues, including the domestic division of labour, equality, abortion and sexuality. It also compares their understandings of and orientations toward the feminist movement. Drawing on Karl Mannheim’s argument that an individual’s location in historical time shapes their social outlooks or world views, it is shown that women of different ages do not share the same gendered life courses due to differing cohort memberships. Consequently, women of different ages interpret, define and give meaning to gender issues and to feminism in varied and contrasting ways. A key concern of the book is to show that findings from qualitative studies are an important supplement to surveys of cohort differences in women’s gender attitudes, in that they are more revealing of the complex ways cohort influences the construction of gender issues, including the very language used to do so.

It reflects what they consider their prize possessions and it gives the reason behind their biggest inspirations. Although, women between 18-35 can learn from this wealth of knowledge and wisdom, all generations can benefit from this book. This book can make a difference in the lives of women. It reassures them that women have some of the same issues and yet they are unique and different in other ways. These two generations have done a superb job of sharing how they made decisions, mistakes, and how they were motivated to learn from them. In addition, they were nurtured, encouraged, and educated. They expressed, being dedicated to a cause (for example, being the first one out of eighteen children in the family to complete high school). What a Legacy for other generations of women who may be afraid to follow their hopes and dreams. One Baby Boomer talked about experiencing the world through books. This book expresses how women lives' matter: today and tomorrow.
