The 1989 International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the 1990 African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) are two major international treaties protecting minors. Each treaty gives rise to new perspectives on children’s rights, and enshrine the principles of the best interests of the child and of children’s ownership of rights. The ACRWC incorporates the CRC’s rights while taking into consideration the specificity of the African context, striving to balance the rule of law with local customs. This book seeks to illustrate the rights and duties enshrined in the ACRWC, as well as the responsibilities established therein regarding the protection of minors. The role of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) will also be examined, in particular its activity of monitoring the States Parties’ implementation of the ACRWC and its institutional powers in exercising its powers. Finally, the book will analyse the progress made by the States Parties to the treaties. The focus will be both on the formal aspect of harmonizing national legal systems and the international rights, and on the substantive “steps required” of States Parties to reach the “opinion of law or necessity” that the ACRWC’s provisions should be perceived, first and foremost, as necessary and socially useful, as well as legally binding.

In February 2014 an international seminar on musical dynamics and creativity in Africa was held at Tor Vergata University of Rome. The topic and the approach were strongly influenced by issues that Gerhard Kubik believed should have been addressed for a long time, such as the attention to cultural and social dynamics, with a specific emphasis on the creativity of individuals. Beside his keynote address, Music Traditions, Change and Creativity in Africa includes the contributions presented by scholars from different countries, particularly active in the East African area and in dialogue with Italian researchers who have field experience in the same region. Music Traditions, Change and Creativity in Africa is the first monograph of a series of volumes connected and inspired to the journal Etnografie Sonore / Sound Ethnographies (www.soundethnographies.it), which Giorgio Adamo and his colleagues recently founded. Border Heritage opens new insights in migration studies through analysis of the same emblematic eastern-central European borderland in Trieste, crossed by four refugee migrations over 70 years of history (1945–2022). Born from a dual personal and professional perspective, the book’s original structure starts from the Ukrainian displacement, going back to the asylum seekers arriving via the Balkans, then to refugees from the former Yugoslavia, and the exodus from Istria after the Second World War; the second part focuses on places, objects, and displaced memories. Each chapter begins with a particularly significant account by a refugee, which anchors the argument in everyday life and gives a human dimension to the following conceptual developments. All but scattered, the narrative plot offers a cohesive thread through the various chapters, analyzing how the various migrations have stratified, overlapped, and contaminated each other. Critically rethinking the heritage of a borderland means rethinking cognitive categories and being able to perceive the different nuances of those on the margins, without necessarily wanting to merge them into a generic “social inclusion” and instead giving them the right to a different voice. This book reverses the monochrome historical perspective to instead adopt the migrants’ perspective and make them the subject of study in a set of historical migrations.

This edited volume presents, for the first time, a history of anthropology regarding not only the well-known European and American traditions, but also lesser-known traditions, extending its scope beyond the Western world. Stocking and taken up by U. Hannerz, the book investigates different histories of anthropology, especially in ex-colonial and marginal contexts.
