Un lungo viaggio dalla cultura classica romana, al medioevo, epoca della condivisione dei valori cristiani, sino al Risorgimento Italiano, ad arrivare ai giorni nostri, volgendo lo sguardo sulla Comunità degli Stati Europei, sulla società contemporanea colpita dall’indifferenza e dall’agnosticismo. “È, dunque, la ‘ ragione ’ economica il nuovo mito della civiltà contemporanea, non solo europea, ma soprattutto europea, anche se, al suo interno, cresce il timore e sale il panico nell’imminente futuro, preda di una classe dirigente insipiente, che ha ricusato le antiche radici culturali e ne ha creato (e ne crea tuttora) delle nuove in antitesi alle antiche, per soddisfare la sete sfrenata di libertà dell’uomo contemporaneo, prodotto, egli stesso della decadente società dei consumi, giunta all’ultimo stadio del processo storico in atto: l’era della tecno-cultura, dominata dai mezzi di comunicazione di massa, che riducono il globo terrestre ad un salotto mediatico”. Luigi Porta Pennazzi si è laureato in “Utroque iure” (diritto canonico e romano) all’Università lateranense ed in diritto civile all’università di Siena; ha frequentato assiduamente le conferenze periodiche di insigni romanisti (Gabrio Lombardi - Francesco Casavola - Remo Martini, preside della facoltà di giurisprudenza di Siena, ecc.) durante i loro dibattiti culturali nella sede ufficiale dell’Università Lateranense; è stato loro allievo nel corso di laurea e, naturalmente, la sua formazione umanistica deve molto alle lezioni di così apprezzati maestri.

Jean-Baptiste Aymard, nella sua biografia di Frithjof Schuon, scrive che in questo libro "Schuon riafferma, oltre al suo approccio universalistico, l’importanza della via di conoscenza, della vera gnosi, ‘tramite tra i diversi linguaggi religiosi’, e ricorda che l’intellezione diretta è in realtà una ‘reminiscenza’, e non un’acquisizione, poiché ‘l’Intelletto coincide, nella sua intima natura, con l’essere medesimo delle cose’. La gnosi è ‘il linguaggio del Sé’, giacché ‘interiormente ogni religione è la dottrina del Sé unico e della sua manifestazione terrena, e la via dell’abolizione del falso sé, o la via della reintegrazione misteriosa della nostra personalità nel Prototipo celeste; esteriormente le religioni sono mitologie, o più esattamente simbolismi disposti in vista dei differenti ricettacoli umani e manifestanti attraverso le loro limitazioni non una contraddizione in divinis, ma al contrario una misericordia’. Nell’ultima parte, dedicata al Cristianesimo, Schuon riprende le questioni che trattano dell’esoterismo cristiano e dei ‘misteri cristici e verginali’. È sorprendente in quest’opera [...] la capacità di Schuon di penetrare [...] nell’espressione spirituale d’una tradizione per restituirne la natura intima".
