This is the story of a genius throttled by British government bureaucracy. Although gagged for decades by the secrecy of that period, the story can now be told in full and these revelations provide a fascinating insight into the attitudes of the wartime government and military establishment, attitudes that led to one of the greatest inventions of all time being offered freely to those who were to become Britain's main aircraft manufacturing competitors.

On 12 April 1937 Frank Whittle became the first person to successfully start and run a turbojet engine. In May 1941 the engine took to the air in an experimental Gloster Whittle aircraft, but despite the RAF's desperate need for air supremacy over her enemies, little support was forthcoming from the military establishment. It was the enthusiasm of the American General Hap Arnold that took the next stage of development to the USA and within six months Whittles invention was powering more American Jets than British. This is the story of the genius throttled by British government bureaucracy, for even when in 1943 Rolls Royce became involved with the successful design and manufacture of engines based on Whittles concepts, his company was nationalized and banned from engine production! This book was previously known as "Genesis of the Jet: Frank Whittle and the invention of the Jet Engine". As part of this new release we have included a supplement by Ian Whittle and a copy of the patents registered in Berlin back in 1931 currently on display at the Deutsches Museum in Germany."

Jets written by Michael Sharpe and has been published by Taj Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-15 with Transportation categories.

Jets is a chronological history of the science of rocket and jet propulsion. The genesis of jet propulsion was the invention of a gun-powdered rocket by the Chinese in the 13th century. The rocket's design was initially intended to enhance fireworks displays, but gradually progressed to assume a critical and formidable place in Chinese weaponry. Man's ability to fly did not benefit from jet propulsion until late August 1939 when the Heinkel He 178 ascended into the skies over Germany propelled purely by turbojet power. Try as they might to develop a jet engine for the Luftwaffe during World War II, the Germans were stymied by repeated problems with the engine. Meanwhile, the British were having greater success and the Gloster E28/39 was in the air in May 1941, followed by the Gloster Meteor in July 1944. By the 1960s all large civilian aircraft were jet powered. Jet engines, just like the aircraft they propel, come in many different types. Inside this book you'll read and view the history and current status of over 75 civilian and military aircraft from around the world from the Concorde to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to the P-80 Lockheed Shooting Star of the 1940s to the F-35 Lightning 11 currently in use by the USAF and capable of vertical take-off.

The story of the jet engine has everything: genius, tragedy, heroism, a world war, the individual vs. the state, and an idea that would change the world. Frank Whittle always maintained that he was held back by a lack of government support. At the very moment in 1943 when his invention was unveiled to the world, his company, Power Jets, was forcibly nationalised. Yet Whittle's brilliance, charm and charisma helped him recruit major support from the British government and the RAF, who gave him the green light to build a jet engine at a time when to do so made little sense. Here is a story of what pushing technology to its limits can achieve - and the effect that such achievement can have on those involved.
