Diese Untersuchung betrachtet die ästhetische Position von Karl Philipp Moritz vor dem Hintergrund der gesamten ästhetischen und philosophischen Diskussion des 18. Jahrhunderts, die hier wiederum, nach dem Prinzip der hermeneutischen Zirkularität, ausgehend von den in Moritz' Schriften in Angriff genommenen Problemkomplexen rekonstruiert wird. Beschäftigte sich der erste Band dieser Untersuchung, der unter dem Titel Schönheit und Nützlichkeit erschienen ist, hauptsächlich mit Moritz' Auseinandersetzung mit der Wirkungsästhetik der Frühaufklärung, so bildet die Entwicklung einer Produktionsästhetik von Baumgarten zum Sturm und Drang und bis zur deutschen Klassik den Gegenstand dieser Betrachtung. Darüber hinaus werden in den letzten Kapiteln Moritz' Ansätze zu einer neuen Theorie des Tragischen rekonstruiert, die sich von der aufklärerischen Diskussion distanziert und wichtige Positionen der Romantik vorwegnimmt.

Improvisation as Art traces how modernity's emphasis on inventiveness has changed the meaning of improvisation; and how the ideals and laws that led improvisation to be banned from "high art" in the eighteenth century simultaneously enabled the inventive reintegration of improvisation into modernism. After an in-depth exploration of contemporary theoretical contentions surrounding improvisation, Landgraf examines how the new emphasis on inventiveness affects the understanding of improvisation in the emerging aesthetic and anthropological discourses of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He first focuses on accounts of improvisational performances by Moritz, Goethe, and Fernow and reads them alongside the aesthetics of autonomy as it develops at the same time. In its second half, the book investigates how the problem of "planning" art receives a different treatment in German Romanticism. The final chapter focuses on the writings of Heinrich von Kleist where improvisation presents a central aesthetic principle. Kleist's figurations of improvisation recognize the anthropological predicament of the self in modern society and the social constraints that invite and often force individuals to improvise.

The Form of Becoming offers an innovative understanding of the emergence around 1800 of the science of embryology and a new notion of development, one based on the epistemology of rhythm. It argues that between 1760 and 1830, the concept of rhythm became crucial to many fields of knowledge, including the study of life and living processes. The book juxtaposes the history of rhythm in music theory, literary theory, and philosophy with the concurrent turn in biology to understanding the living world in terms of rhythmic patterns, rhythmic movement, and rhythmic representations. Common to all these fields was their view of rhythm as a means of organizing time — and of ordering the development of organisms. Janina Wellmann, a historian of science, has written the first systematic study of visualization in embryology. Embryological development circa 1800 was imagined through the pictorial technique of the series, still prevalent in the field today. Tracing the origins of the developmental series back to seventeenth-century instructional graphics for military maneuvers, dance, and craft work, The Form of Becoming reveals the constitutive role of rhythm and movement in the visualization of developing life.

Karl Philipp Moritz (d. 1793) was one of the most innovative writers of the late Enlightenment in Germany. A novelist, travel writer, editor, and teacher he is probably best known today for his autobiographical novel Anton Reiser (1785–90) and for his treatises on aesthetics, foremost among them Über die bildende Nachahmung des Schönen (On the Formative Imitation of the Beautiful) (1788). In this treatise, Moritz develops the concept of aesthetic autonomy, which became widely known after Goethe included a lengthy excerpt of it in his own Italian Journey (1816–17). It was one of the foundational texts of Weimar classicism, and it became pivotal for the development of early Romanticism. In The Topography of Modernity, Elliott Schreiber gives Moritz the credit he deserves as an important thinker beyond his contributions to aesthetic theory. Indeed, he sees Moritz as an incisive early observer and theorist of modernity. Considering a wide range of Moritz’s work including his novels, his writings on mythology, prosody, and pedagogy, and his political philosophy and psychology, Schreiber shows how Moritz’s thinking developed in response to the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment and paved the way for later social theorists to conceive of modern society as differentiated into multiple, competing value spheres.

The call by German Early Romantic writers for a new mythology is one of the boldest and most unusual demands by any literary theorist. This study asks how an age which variously saw mythology as a historical phenomenon or a collection of artistically useful images came to see the need for its renewal at all. The author traces the evolving role of mythology in the writings of Winckelmann, Herder, Moritz and Schiller and argues that the late eighteenth century saw the emergence of a new conception of mythology which depended less on an established iconography and cultural context and more on the poetic and linguistic functions of mythology. This dehistoricized view of mythology formed the basis of the Romantic project and the author examines the works of Friedrich Schlegel and Schelling as well as the Älteste Systemprogramm des deutschen Idealismus against that background.

Ästhetische und politische Diskurse standen im späten 18. Jahrhundert in einem untrennbaren Wechselverhältnis. Nicht nur wird politische Theorie im Gewand der Ästhetik formuliert, sondern ebenso wird die aus der Ästhetikdiskussion stammende Begrifflichkeit für gesellschaftskritische Gegenentwürfe fruchtbar gemacht. Das moderne Subjekt konstitutiert sich im deutschen Sprachraum so wesentlich als "Homo Aestheticus". Kommt dies bei Kant und Schiller theoretisch am avanciertesten zum Ausdruck, stellt sich der Vorgang in Berlin um 1790 systematisch weniger elaboriert, dafür aber praxisnäher dar. Die ästhetischen Entwürfe und literarischen Fiktionen von Autoren wie Karl Philipp Moritz, Salomon Maimon, Daniel Jenisch, Johann Friedrich Reichardt oder dem jungen Wilhelm von Humboldt sind sowohl Reflexionen als auch normative Vorwegnahmen des Wandels von der noch weitgehend höfisch dominierten Residenzkultur der friderizianischen Epoche zur emanzipierten Stadtkultur des Reformzeitalters. Der in der Studie verfolgte topographische methodische Zugang ermöglicht es, die untersuchten ideellen Diskurse institutionen- und mediengeschichtlich zu verankern und als Argumentationsstrategien innerhalb konkreter Debatten zu verstehen. Durch die lokale und temporale Konzentration lässt sich der Gegenstand zudem quer zur disziplinären Arbeitsteilung (Geschichte, Literatur, Philosophie) und zu literatur- und kulturgeschichtlichen Epochengrenzen untersuchen.

Die Studie bemüht sich um eine genaue Rekonstruktion des ästhetischen Denkens Goethes von den frühesten Äußerungen bis zu den Ergebnissen der italienischen Reise. Dieses Untersuchungsgebiet ist insbesondere deshalb von großem transdisziplinärem Interesse, als sich hier schon sehr früh Tendenzen zur Autonomisierung der Künste und zur theoretischen Reflexion dieses Prozesses abzeichnen. Darüber hinaus stellen die lakonischen, genialisch-rhapsodischen oder manifestartig verknappten Essays Goethes auch in formaler Hinsicht ein Spezifikum dar: Sie thematisieren und reflektieren ihren theoretischen Gehalt selbst in ihrer textuellen Performanz. In methodischer Anlehnung an Pierre Bourdieus Theorie des literarischen Feldes unternimmt der Verfasser eingängige intertextuelle Mikroanalysen paradigmatischer und programmatischer theoretischer Schriften (»Zum Schäkespears Tag«, »Von deutscher Baukunst«, »Einfache Nachahmung der Natur, Manier, Styl«) und berücksichtigt dabei erstmals auf systematische Weise sowohl die unmittelbaren Entstehungsumstände und künstlerischen Bezugspunkte als auch v.a. die epistemologischen und ideengeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen im übernationalen europäischen Kontext. Ein Ergebnis der Studie ist die genauere Differenzierung zwischen Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten im ästhetischen Denken Goethes auf epistemologischem und auf kognitivem Niveau. Des weiteren wird die kultursoziologische und diskurshistorische Funktionalität zahlreicher Phänomene in den Blick genommen. Die Spezifik wie auch die Exemplarität des (häufig geringgeschätzten) nicht-systematischen "Ästhetikers" Goethe können somit vor einem erweiterten Horizont neu diskutiert werden.

Wer den Klassizismus vor allem mit Schlagworten wie 'Harmonie' und 'schöne Ganzheit' verbindet, der übersieht, daß das Schönheitsideal dieser Epoche vom Phantasma der Verletzung durchdrungen ist. Irmela Marei Krüger-Fürhoff revidiert in ihrer Studie das klassizistische Schönheitsideal, indem sie nachweist, daß der versehrte Körper zugleich als ausgeschlossenes und konstitutives Moment von Literatur und Ästhetik um 1800 verstanden werden muß. Mit dem Begriff der Versehrung greift sie auf ein historisches Wortfeld zurück, das im späten 18. Jahrhundert das Spektrum von der leichten Hautritzung bis zur tödlichen Verwundung umfaßt, aber auch die Zerstörung sexueller Integrität bezeichnet. Im Mittelpunkt der Studie steht die Relektüre kanonisierter Texte, in denen versehrte Körper zur Sprache kommen - von Winckelmann, Lessing, Herder und Goethe bis zu Moritz, Kleist, Günderrode und Arnim. Um die Verbindung zwischen einer Poetik der Verwundung und einer Geschichte gewaltsam geöffneter Körper zu zeigen, werden Literatur und Kunsttheorie mit anderen Diskursen des späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhunderts konfrontiert: mit Schlachtberichten der Befreiungskriege, gerichtsmedizinischen Untersuchungen und populären Reiseführern sowie mit antiken Skulpturen, zeitgenössischen Radierungen, Wachstableaus und anatomischen Modellen. Auf diese Weise werden literaturwissenschaftliche und kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven zu einem luziden Beitrag zu aktuellen Debatten in Germanistik, Ästhetiktheorie, Körpergeschichte und Gender Studies verknüpft.
