È un fascino misterioso, quello che avvolge la città di Genova. Chi la visita per la prima volta rimane un po’ straniato dalla bellezza delle strade, dell’architettura e della sua storia, importante e tortuosa. Dalla “Foce” ai “caruggi” si respira soprattutto aria di musica, perché è in questi luoghi che sono cresciuti i padri della canzone d'autore italiana. Questo libro nasce dalla volontà di ripercorre la vita dei cantautori, sconfinando dai limiti dettati dalla presunta “scuola genovese” ed esplorando piuttosto quei legami e quelle amicizie che hanno dato vita a un fenomeno unico. Alimentati dal fervore culturale degli anni Cinquanta, un gruppo di ragazzi si appassionò alle note del jazz, ascoltato nei dischi degli alleati americani, e alle parole dei vicini chansonnier francesi. Il coinvolgimento era tale da non distinguere più chi scriveva canzoni da chi le cantava; ognuno mise in campo la propria creatività. L'amicizia, che si estendeva a persone estranee all'ambiente musicale, è stato un elemento fondamentale per questo scambio di idee ed è all'origine dell'affinarsi di uno stile personale, diverso da cantautore a cantautore. Si giunge poi all’emigrazione milanese e all'incontro con altri capostipiti della musica italiana, attratti e innamorati della gente di Zena. Tra le pagine di Genova per noi, la città ligure rappresenta un costante sottofondo musicale, vista con gli occhi di chi ci è nato e vissuto e anche con quelli di chi ne ha percepito il fascino, tanto da esserle debitore. Le interviste raccolte dalle autrici portano il lettore a calare uno sguardo su cosa è diventata Genova, oggi erede di un passato musicale importante e ingombrante. Come nel resto d'Italia, oggi la crisi discografica è persistente, ma non esclude la presenza di una variegata vitalità artistica. La musica e i cantautori genovesi esistono ancora, in forme diverse.
