Depuis l'apparition du terme, emo a fini par definir differentes variantes independantes, aux liens de parente assez laches, mais ayant une origine commune. Son utilisation (notamment en ce qui concerne le fait de savoir quels groupes peuvent recevoir ce qualificatif) est sujette a controverses. A l'origine, l'appellation emo etait utilisee pour decrire la musique issue de la scene hardcore de Washington, D.C. au milieu des annees 1980. Plus tard, le terme emocore, abreviation d' emotional hardcore, fut egalement appliquee a la scene de Washington et a certaines des scenes regionales (aux Etats-Unis) qu'elle a engendrees. Les groupes les plus notoirement associes a l'emo a cette periode comprennent Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party et, un peu plus tard, Moss Icon. Le declin de la premiere vague emo a debute apres la separation de la majorite des groupes qui la composaient, au debut des annees 1990. A partir du milieu des annees 1990, l'emo a commence a refleter la scene indie influencee par le nouveau groupe de Ian MacKaye, Fugazi, lui-meme un derive de la premiere vague emo. Des groupes comme Sunny Day Real Estate et Texas Is The Reason ont propose un style emo plus proche de l'indie rock, plus melodique...
