Reggae und Dancehall gehören zu den einflussreichsten Stilbereichen populärer Musik der vergangenen Jahrzehnte. Auf der Karibikinsel Jamaika entstanden, durchliefen sie international intensive Aneignungsprozesse und werden mittlerweile weltweit gehört und gespielt. Diese Studie spürt den ästhetischen Phänomenen des Genres nach. Durch die Verschränkung diskurs-, bild- und musikanalytischer Zugänge werden die Bewertungskriterien von Experten, die visuellen Darstellungen der Musiker sowie die musikalischen Klänge im Reggae und Dancehall analysiert und wechselseitig aufeinander bezogen. Damit reagiert die Studie auf aktuelle Herausforderungen der wissenschaftlichen Analyse populärer Musik: Nicht nur das Klanggeschehen im Reggae und Dancehall, sondern auch die darauf bezogenen Bewertungskriterien werden empirisch untersucht und als Interpretationsgrundlage genutzt. Popular culture today manifests itself in a dense network of styles and genres, while the aesthetic preferences of the audience are highly differentiated. Besides, popular culture also implies a diversity of aesthetic strategies, discourses and value systems that traverse the symbolic demarcations between styles and genres and are effective across different artistic fields and individual media. Aesthetic concepts such as camp, retro or trash are expressions of a transgressive mode of production that facilitates a multitude of cross-connections between aesthetic spaces of experience. The volume brings together authors from different disciplines who approach aesthetic concepts in popular culture on a historical, theoretical and methodological level, analyze them on the basis of various aesthetic phenomena, or discuss aspects relevant to their theoretical contextualization, such as the emergence and establishment of artistic practices and aesthetic value systems.

Wie kann der Bezug von Sprachgebrauch und diskursiv geteiltem Wissen theoretisch und methodologisch modelliert werden? Wie kann Generizität über logisch-semantische Fragestellungen hinaus als zentrales Mittel sprachlicher Wissensbildung funktional beschrieben werden? Wie wird Verallgemeinerung im Kontext kolonialer Kommunikation sprachlich realisiert? Diese Fragen beantwortet die Untersuchung im Rahmen diskursanalytischer Theoriebildung und auf der Grundlage eines funktional-kommunikativen Sprachbegriffs. Die Arbeit zeigt in Text-, Satz- und Wortanalysen, dass pragmatische Inferenzen, syntaktische Strukturen und Wortbildungsmuster auf verschiedenen Ebenen zur Realisierung sprachlicher Verallgemeinerung beitragen. Datengrundlage der Untersuchung sind massenmediale und politische Diskurse der deutschen Kolonialzeit 1900 bis 1910, in denen geteiltes Wissen mit dem Anspruch auf Allgemeingültigkeit durch generischen Sprachgebrauch indiziert wird. Die Arbeit ist damit an der Schnittstelle von Diskurslinguistik, (Post)Colonial Linguistics, Sprachgebrauchsgeschichte und Pragmatik verortet.

Shifting Genres in Late Antiquity examines the transformations that took place in a wide range of genres, both literary and non-literary, in this dynamic period. The Christianisation of the Roman empire and the successor kingdoms had a profound impact on the evolution of Greek and Roman literature, and many aspects of this are discussed in this volume - the composition of church history, the collection of papal letters, heresiology, homiletics and apologetic. Contributors discuss authors such as John Chrysostom, Ambrose of Milan, Cassiodorus, Jerome, Liberatus of Carthage, Victor of Vita, and Epiphanius of Salamis as well as the Collectio Avellana. Secular literature too, however, underwent important changes, notably in Constantinople in the sixth century. Several chapters accordingly reassess the work of Procopius of Caesarea and literature of this period; attention is also given to the evolution of the chronicle genre. Technical writing, such as military manuals and legal texts, are the focus of other chapters; further genres considered include monody, epigraphy and epistolography. Changes in visual representation are also considered in chapters devoted to diptychs, monuments and coins. A common theme that emerges from the chapters is the flexibility and adaptability of genres in the period: late antique authors, whether orators or historians, were not slavish followers of their classical predecessors. They were capable of engaging with their models, adapting them to their own purposes, and producing work that deserves to be considered on its own merits. It is necessary to examine their texts and genres closely to grasp what they set out to do; on occasion, attention must also be paid to the transmission of these texts. The volume as a whole represents a significant contribution to the reassessment of late antique culture in general.
