Cet ouvrage fait le bilan d'une recherche internationale conduite durant sept années dans sept pays différents : Argentine, Brésil, Cuba, Burkina Faso, Sénégal, Bulgarie, Roumanie. Il a pour but de rendre compte des stratégies imaginées par des populations locales, tout particulièrement celles initiées par les femmes dans leurs quartiers, pour tenter de pallier les problèmes d'environnements urbains vécus au quotidien. La durée de cette recherche, plutôt inhabituelle en sciences sociales, est l'occasion de dresser un bilan sur les éléments qui l'ont caractérisée. Méthodologiquement tout d'abord avec des questionnements sur la problématique à l'origine du travail, sur la complexité d'une activité de recherche en réseau, sur la démarche qualitative faisant appel à la recherche-action, sur le recours à une analyse de genre et à son rôle dans la prise de conscience des problèmes, ou encore sur l'urgente nécessité pour les sciences sociales de travailler sur les défis de l'environnement. Bilan des acquis ensuite, en s'interrogeant sur ce que nous avons appris sur les terrains pour mieux comprendre et gérer les transformations sociales. Nous mentionnons le renforcement des collaborations avec les autorités politiques de différents niveaux et jusqu'à celui de l'État, les traits culturels propres aux stratégies des mouvements de quartiers, la dimension initiatrice des identités (y compris masculines) dans l'élaboration de projets, le rôle incontournable de l'éducation populaire, l'application des règles de droit ou encore la nécessité de convaincre et de faire que les hommes puissent collaborer avec les femmes dans leurs entreprises, y compris celles liées au renforcement de leurs capacités et à la valorisation de leurs rôles et statuts. Cet ouvrage rassemble les contributions des différentes équipes partenaires et a été élaboré sous la direction de François Hainard et de Christine Verschuur, initiateurs et coordinateurs de la recherche. Les travaux se sont inscrits dans le cadre du projet MOST (Gestion des transformations sociales) de l'UNESCO. II est destiné à un public large et varié : étudiants, enseignants et chercheurs en sciences sociales et humaines, décideurs politiques, administrations, ONG, associations locales, ainsi qu'à toute personne intéressée par les problèmes de la ville, du développement, des relations Nord-Sud et à une réflexion qui prend en compte la dimension genre. François Hainard est professeur de sociologie et directeur de l'Institut de sociologie de l'Université de Neuchâtel en Suisse. The topic of stigma came to the attention of modern-day behav ioral science in 1963 through Erving Goffman's book with the engaging title, Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. Following its publication, scholars in such fields as an thropology, clinical psychology, social psychology, sociology, and history began to study the important role of stigma in human interaction. Beginning in the early 1960s and continuing to the present day, a body of research literature has emerged to extend, elaborate, and qualify Goffman's original ideas. The essays pre sented in this volume are the outgrowth of these developments and represent an attempt to add impetus to theory and research in this area. Much of the stigma research that has been conducted since 1963 has sought to test one or another of Goffman's notions about the effects of stigma on social interactions and the self. Social and clinical psychologists have tried to experimentally create a number of the effects that Goffman asserted stigmas have on ordinary social interactions, and sociologists have looked for eVidence of the same in survey and observational studies of stig matized people in situations of everyday life. By 1980, a consider able body of empirical evidence had been amassed about social stigmas and the devastating effects they can have on social interactions.

This book provides an insightful approach to understanding the contemporary circulations of feminist repertoires and shows how the international/transnational circulations of gender are interconnected, even coextensive, with the globalization process itself.
