Diese Zeilen sind in einer germanischen Sprache verfasst – aber mit lateinischen Buchstaben geschrieben. Das zeigt schon: Unsere Kultur ist im gewissen Sinne das Ergebnis einer erfolgreichen Fusion, der Verschmelzung zweier ganz unterschiedlicher Traditionen. Auf der einen Seite steht das Erbe des römischen Imperiums. Davon kündet neben unserem Alphabet auch eine Vielzahl von Römerstädten wie Köln oder Trier. Der Nachlass der Germanen dagegen ist weniger greifbar und dennoch präsent. Nicht zuletzt als wirkmächtiger Mythos. Diese eigentümliche Mischung ist die Folge einer bewegten Geschichte. Angefangen bei Gaius Iulius Caesar, der im Jahr 55 v. Chr. erstmals auf das Gebiet jener Stämme vordrang, die er allesamt als "Germanen" bezeichnete. Allen Anstrengungen zum Trotz konnten die Römer die Bevölkerung zwischen Rhein und Elbe nicht unterwerfen. Am Ende waren es die Germanen, die das Imperium eroberten. Und zu neuen Herren aufstiegen. Wir finden diese folgenreiche Beziehung so spannend, dass wir den Germanen ein weiteres Heft widmen. Wir füllen Lücken und berücksichtigen die aktuelle Forschung. Es passiert ja auch viel. Immer noch werden neue Spuren entdeckt – zum Beispiel die spektakuläre Fundstätte am Harzhorn, Schauplatz einer Schlacht, die Forscher zuvor für unmöglich gehalten hatten (siehe Seite 116). Selbst zum wohl berühmtesten Ereignis der germanisch- römischen Geschichte – der Varusschlacht – gibt es neue Erkenntnisse. Wir haben mit Dr. Stefan Burmeister, dem Geschäftsführer des Museums in Kalkriese, darüber gesprochen (siehe Seite 152). Zum Anspruch von GEOEPOCHE gehört es, die Vergangenheit auch im Bild zu neuem Leben zu erwecken. Bei den Germanen, die notorisch wenig hinterlassen haben, ist das nicht ganz einfach. Umso stolzer sind wir auf die Illustrationen, die der Künstler Samson J. Goetze angefertigt hat (beraten von der Archäologin Dr. Ruth Blankenfeldt). Näher sind wir den Germanen noch nie gekommen. Wir hoffen, es geht Ihnen ähnlich.
