Der Westen hat die Globalisierung nicht erfunden. Schon vor mehr als 2000 Jahren knüpft ein ausgedehntes, hochdynamisches Handels- und Kommunikationsnetz in Asien die Welten zusammen. Bestehen regelmäßige Kontakte zwischen den Völkern am Mittelmeer und den Reichen in Fernost. Diese Verbindung beruht weniger auf Technik als auf Menschen: Es sind die Bewohner im Herzen der gewaltigen asiatischen Landmasse, die als Vermittler, Diplomaten, Kaufleute auftreten, die, wie etwa das zentralasiatische Volk der Sogder, den Austausch von Luxusgütern zwischen Ost und West orchestrieren, von Seide und Pferden, chinesischem Lack, Glas und Gewürzen. Wie in modernen globalisierten Zeiten bleibt es damals nicht beim Handel von Waren. Mit den Karawanen reisen Nachrichten, Innovationen, wie das Geheimnis der Papierherstellung, Religionen und Weltsichten – manchmal sogar tödliche Krankheiten. Es blüht das Geschäft, aber zugleich auch der Transfer von Wissen, Kultur und von Risiken. Erst 1877 wird ein Vortrag des deutschen Geografen Ferdinand von Richthofen den bis heute üblichen Namen für Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser dieses Geflecht etablieren: "Seidenstraßen". Und der Plural ist angebracht, denn die Routen selbst kennzeichnet ja Vielfalt; den einen Pfad zwischen Ost und West gibt es nicht. Je nach politischer Lage ist ein Karawanenweg, den man zuvor über Jahrhunderte begehen konnte, plötzlich kaum noch passierbar. Klimaveränderungen können Brunnen und ganze Oasenstädte im Sand der Wüste verschwinden lassen, Bergstürze wichtige Pässe verschütten. Bald weichen Kaufleute sogar aus aufs Meer, wo sich ein zweiter erfolgreicher, heute kaum bekannter Strang der Seidenstraße bildet. Von all dem erzählt dieses Heft. Es berichtet aber auch davon, wie die einstige Nervenbahn des Welthandels im Lauf des 16. Jahrhunderts in Bedeutungslosigkeit verfällt. Weil die Europäer sich anschicken, die Herrschaft über die Meere und den Rest der Welt zu erobern. Erst als sie sich den Globus weitgehend untertan gemacht haben, entdecken sie auch Zentralasien wieder – um das im 19. Jahrhundert ein fürchterlicher Kampf der Großmächte entbrennt. Meine Großeltern lernten sich in einem Ruderclub in Frankfurt an der Oder kennen. Meine Oma Ilse erzählte gern voller Stolz, wie sie sich im Einer auf den Fluss hinauswagte und unter den Bögen der großen Brücke hindurchglitt, die die beiden Teile der Stadt verband. Heute, fast 90 Jahre später, ziehen noch immer Ruderer auf der Oder ihre Bahnen, aber das Viertel am östlichen Ufer ist ein polnischer Ort namens Słubice, und der Fluss markiert die Grenze zwischen Polen und Deutschland. Man kann die Geschichte Polens, die wir Ihnen in diesem Heft näherbringen wollen, auch als Geschichte seiner Grenzen erzählen. Unsere Kartografin Stefanie Peters hat sie in zehn eigens angefertigten Karten nachgezeichnet: Angefangen beim slawischen Fürsten Mieszko I., der um 960 das heutige Zentralpolen beherrschte, über das goldene Zeitalter des Reichs während der Renaissance, als Polen-Litauen der größte Flächenstaat Europas war, bis zum Jahr 1795, als Preußen, Russen und Habsburger mit imperialer Habgier das Land gänzlich von der Karte tilgten. Erst nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg sollte Polen wieder erstehen. Damals kam in Deutschland der perfide Begriff auf, das Nachbarland sei nicht mehr als ein "Saisonstaat", eine vorübergehende Erscheinung. Das Gegenteil ist wahr, wie Sie auf den folgenden Seiten lesen können. Seit mehr als 1000 Jahren ist Polen eine Macht im Herzen Europas, mal stärker, mal schwächer, aber immer auf die Bewahrung seiner Eigenständigkeit bedacht. Aus deutscher Sicht ist es über weite Strecken eine geteilte Geschichte (nicht zufällig ist unser Wort "Grenze" ein Lehnwort aus dem Slawischen). Tatsächlich aber sind wir wohl mit keinem anderen unserer Nachbarländer derart eng verbunden – durch Familiengeschichten, aber auch durch historische Schuld. Mein Großvater, dessen Vornamen ich trage, war einer jener deutschen Soldaten, die am 1. September 1939 in Polen einfielen. Der Feldzug war der Auftakt einer Schreckenszeit, in der den Polen von Deutschen unfassbares Leid angetan wurde. Wie wir Nachgeborenen im 21. Jahrhundert mit diesem Erbe umgehen sollen, haben wir mit dem Historiker Jan C. Behrends besprochen. Er lehrt an einer Institution, die mit ihrer grenzüberschreitenden Ausrichtung viel Hoffnung auf eine friedliche Zukunft macht: der Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt an der Oder.

The German lacuna in Edward Said’s 'Orientalism' has produced varied studies of German cultural and academic Orientalisms. So far the domains of German politics and scholarship have not been conflated to probe the central power/knowledge nexus of Said’s argument. Seeking to fill this gap, the diplomatic career and scholarly-literary productions of the centrally placed Friedrich Rosen serve as a focal point to investigate how politics influenced knowledge generated about the “Orient” and charts the roles knowledge played in political decision-making regarding extra-European regions. This is pursued through analyses of Germans in British imperialist contexts, cultures of lowly diplomatic encounters in Middle Eastern cities, Persian poetry in translation, prestigious Orientalist congresses in northern climes, leveraging knowledge in high-stakes diplomatic encounters, and the making of Germany’s Islam policy up to the Great War. Politics drew on bodies of knowledge and could promote or hinder scholarship. Yet, scholars never systemically followed empire in its tracks but sought their own paths to cognition. On their own terms or influenced by “Oriental” savants they aligned with politics or challenged claims to conquest and rule.
