Dass China in den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten zu einer Supermacht wurde, ist nicht überraschend – wohl aber, dass es erst so spät dazu kam. Denn das Land hatte schon viel früher in seiner mehr als 2000jährigen Geschichte alle Voraussetzungen, um zu einem Global Player zu werden, dessen militärische und ökonomische Kraft die Entwicklung des gesamten Erdballs prägt. Doch immer gab es Faktoren, die diese Entwicklung verhinderten: Mal war es eine Invasion aus der Steppe, dann ein Bürgerkrieg und schließlich der Beschluss der Kaiser, ihr Reich vor der Welt zu isolieren. Dabei war das chinesische Imperium bereits bei seiner Gründung eine Macht mit einzigartigem Potenzial: Der erste Kaiser, Qin Shi Huangdi, überwältigte im 3. Jahr hundert v. Chr. sämtliche Nachbarstaaten mit brutaler Gewalt und vereinigte sie unter seiner Herrschaft; bei seinem Tod im Jahr 210 v. Chr. umfasste Chinas Territorium mehr als drei Millionen Quadratkilometer. Zur gleichen Zeit rang das zehnmal kleinere Imperium Romanum noch mit den Karthagern um die Dominanz im westlichen Mittelmeerraum. Zur Zeit von Christi Geburt geboten Chinas Kaiser über mindestens 60 Millionen Untertanen, mehr als alle anderen Monarchen dieser Epoche. Doch ihre Herrschaft endete in blutigen Wirren und Palast kämpfen; für Jahrhunderte zerfiel China in rivalisierende Reiche. Um das Jahr 1000 war das Land wiedervereint – und der mit weitem Abstand modernste Staat der Erde: Die mehr als eine Million Mann starke Armee experimentierte mit Flammenwerfern und Explosionswaffen, es gab eine Stahl und Eisenindustrie (deren Produktionsmenge Großbritannien erst 800 Jahre später erreichte), Papiermanufakturen, Großdruckereien, Textilmaschinen. Und die Hauptstadt Kaifeng war eine Millionenmetropole, während im damaligen Köln (der größten Stadt im römischdeutschen Reich) vielleicht 20 000 Menschen lebten. In den folgenden Jahrhunderten stürzte China noch mehrmals ab, stieg jedes Mal wieder auf, stand um 1440 sogar kurz vor dem Ausgreifen nach Indien und Afrika. Doch dann wandte sich das Reich überraschend für lange Zeit von der Welt ab – und war durch diese selbst gewählte Absonderung schließlich so geschwächt, dass es dem An sturm der Kolonialmächte im 19. Jahrhundert nichts entgegenzusetzen hatte. Von den erstaunlichen Ausschlägen der chinesischen Geschichte erzählen wir in diesem Heft. Es ergänzt ein früheres über das Kaiserreich, das 2002 erschienen ist, sowie die Ausgabe über "Das China des Mao Zedong", in der wir berichten, wie es mit dem Reich der Mitte nach der Revolution von 1912 weiterging – und wie es dazu kam, dass es schließlich doch noch zu einer Supermacht wurde.

Networks of Modernity: Germany in the Age of the Telegraph, 1830-1880 offers a fresh perspective on the history of Germany by investigating the origins and impact of the 'communications revolution' that transformed state and society during the nineteenth century. It focuses upon the period 1830-1880, exploring the interactions between the many different actors who developed, administered, and used one of the most important technologies of the period-the electric telegraph. It reveals the channels through which scientific and technical knowledge circulated across Central Europe during the 1830s and 1840s, stimulating both collaboration and confrontation between the scientists, technicians, businessmen, and bureaucrats involved in bringing the telegraph to life. It highlights the technology's impact upon the conduct of trade, finance, news distribution, and government in the tumultuous decades that witnessed the 1848 revolutions, the wars of unification, and the establishment of the Kaiserreich in 1871. Following the telegraph lines themselves, it weaves together the changes which took place at a local, regional, national, and eventually global level, revisiting the technology's impact upon concepts of space and time, and highlighting the importance of this period in laying the foundations for Germany's experience of a profoundly ambiguous, networked modernity.

In Benjamin’s Library, Jane O. Newman offers, for the first time in any language, a reading of Walter Benjamin’s notoriously opaque work, Origin of the German Tragic Drama that systematically attends to its place in discussions of the Baroque in Benjamin’s day. Taking into account the literary and cultural contexts of Benjamin’s work, Newman recovers Benjamin’s relationship to the ideologically loaded readings of the literature and political theory of the seventeenth-century Baroque that abounded in Germany during the political and economic crises of the Weimar years. To date, the significance of the Baroque for Origin of the German Tragic Drama has been glossed over by students of Benjamin, most of whom have neither read it in this context nor engaged with the often incongruous debates about the period that filled both academic and popular texts in the years leading up to and following World War I. Armed with extraordinary historical, bibliographical, philological, and orthographic research, Newman shows the extent to which Benjamin participated in these debates by reconstructing the literal and figurative history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books that Benjamin analyzes and the literary, art historical and art theoretical, and political theological discussions of the Baroque with which he was familiar. The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.
