In dieser Ausgabe behandeln wir ein Thema, das man als eine Art historischer Dunkler Materie bezeichnen könnte: das alte Persien. Eine uralte Kulturnation zwischen Orient und Okzident. Eine Abfolge von Reichen von bis dahin nicht gekannter Ausdehnung und Machtfülle, die sich zeitweilig über drei Kontinente erstreckten, Asien, Afrika und Europa, und in ihrer Gesamtheit länger als das Imperium Romanum existierten. Trotz dieser außerordentlichen Geschichte verfügen Historiker nur über verhältnismäßig spärliche Informationen zu Persien. Dabei beeinflussten seine Könige den Verlauf der Geschichte mehr als ein Jahrtausend lang auch weit über ihren Herrschaftsbereich hinaus. Etwa im Konflikt mit Griechenland: Die Strafexpeditionen, die Persiens Herrscher ab 490 v. Chr. gegen die Hellenen anordneten, scheiterten zwar – doch sie schufen gerade durch ihr Misslingen einen Gründungsmythos der europäischen Zivilisation: Athener und Spartaner hätten das Prinzip der Freiheit gegen die Despotie verteidigt, behaupten viele Dichter und Gelehrte seither und feiern den Triumph des Bürgersinns über die Sklaverei. Ebenso sehr prägte Persien die Entwicklung des Römischen Reiches: Die Großkönige waren die vielleicht gefährlichsten Gegner der Caesaren, fügten ihnen einige ihrer bittersten Niederlagen zu. Immer wieder musste Rom seine Legionen im 3. und 4. Jahrhundert nach Osten entsenden – und dabei Kräfte einsetzen, die andernorts benötigt wurden, vor allem im Kampf gegen germanische Völkerscharen. Auf diese Weise trugen die Perser zur Schwächung des Weströmischen Reiches bei, das 476 n. Chr. schließlich unterging. Den vielleicht größten Einfluss auf den Verlauf der Weltgeschichte gewann Persien allerdings durch eine vernichtende Niederlage: Ab 638 n. Chr. überrannten muslimische Beduinen ihr Reich. Doch wie ein derart ausgedehntes Territorium und so viele Völker zu beherrschen waren, das wussten die Streiter aus der arabischen Wüste nicht. Sie lernten es von den seit Jahrhunderten darin erfahrenen Persern – und diese Lektion machte den weiteren Siegeszug des Islam, die dauerhafte Etablierung muslimischer Staatswesen, überhaupt erst möglich. Wir hoffen, auf den folgenden Seiten ein wenig mehr Licht ins Dunkel der Geschichte dieses faszinierenden Landes zu bringen: des alten Persien.
