Vor allem, weil sie mit ihrem emsigen Bestäubungsdienst für rund 70 Prozent unserer bedeutendsten Nutzpflanzen unverzichtbar sind – und damit für die Ernährung ausgerechnet jener Spezies Homo sapiens, die mit ihrem Walten und Wirken weit über die Hälfte aller Bienenpopulationen binnen weniger Jahre ausgerottet hat. In dieser Ausgabe von GEOkompakt wollen wir das Faszinosum der Insekten aber nicht auf ihre unbestreitbare Nützlichkeit reduzieren. Und auch nicht ausschließlich ihre Gefährdung diskutieren. Sondern auch und vor allem die wunderbaren Volten der Evolution feiern, mit denen die Sechsbeiner uns ein ums andere Mal in Staunen und Bewunderung versetzen. Ein Gefühl, das allein uns schon für den Schutz der Insekten motivieren sollte. Manche von ihnen tragen die Ohren am Knie, andere schmecken mit den Füßen. Viele können UV-Licht sehen und andere kopulieren mehr als 70 Tage lang mit ihren Sex-Partnern. Und während wir Menschen schon finden, dass wir in der Pubertät eine Phase des großen Umbruchs durchleben, verwandeln zahlreiche Insekten sich im Laufe ihres Lebens per Metamorphose von einer Daseinsform als Larve in eine vollkommen andere als erwachsenes Wesen. Dies ist die erste Ausgabe, die wir als neue Chefredakteure von GEOkompakt betreuen durften. Und wir sind froh, unsere Amtszeit mit einem so ungemein farbenfrohen, frappierenden und zugleich für uns alle relevanten Thema beginnen zu dürfen. Nature provides us with many services seemingly for free: recharged groundwater, fertile soil and plant biomass created by photosynthesis. We human beings draw extensive benefits from these “ecosystem services,” or ES – food, water supply, recreation and protection from natural hazards. Major international studies, such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, have addressed the enormous role of biodiversity and ecosystems to human well-being, and they draw particular attention to the consequences resulting from the reduction or loss of these services.
