This book discusses techniques for predicting, preventing and controlling the hydrogeological instability of slopes consisting of cohesive soils. The proposed methodology is practical and innovative, and assumes a dynamic valence in defining the deformation process of underground failure as well as its activation through the assumption of a four-dimensional space-time continuum. This latter aspect is crucial for predicting a landslide in time to control it. At present, predicting, preventing and controlling hydrogeological instability in cohesive soils relies on mathematical modelling using specific software, the predictive reliability of which is rather deficient. Such modelling is based upon deterministic processes, which are entirely unsuitable for dealing with the complexity of vital processes occurring during the genesis of a landslide. In this work, the three-dimensional vision of a landslide as a set of distinct and independent phenomena is abandoned and the prediction and prevention of hydrogeological instability is pursued through the alternative of an indivisible totality of natural phenomena that includes the time factor. The book is of interest to graduates and researchers of applied geology, geotechnical, environmental and civil engineering, as well as professionals in the fields of hydrogeology and natural hazards.

Nell'ambito del programma INTERREG II C MEDOC, progetto Paesaggi Mediterranei ed Alpini, coordinato dalla Regione Sardegna, a cui hanno collaborato diverse regioni italiane, francesi e spagnole, il Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali - Ufficio Centrale per i Beni Ambientali e Paesaggistici - ha affidato alla Scuola di Specializzazione in Architettura del Paesaggio, della Facoltà di Architettura, Dipartimento POLIS dell'Università di Genova, uno studio articolato in due fasi: una di analisi e una di valutazione del paesaggio, mirate all'individuazione di linee guida per operazioni di progettazione e proposte di gestione del paesaggio. Il percorso metodologico elaborato è stato applicato a due casi di studio: il primo relativo a un territorio dell'entroterra ligure, situato a est di Genova (la Val Bisagno) e il secondo relativo ad un'area costiera sottoposta a rapide trasformazioni (la fascia costiera occidentale del Ponente genovese di Voltri-Vesima). Il lavoro è stato sviluppato, sulla base della ricerca MURST Metodologia per la redazione di un Atlante dei paesaggi italiani, assumendo come riferimento principale la Convenzione Europea del Paesaggio elaborata dal Congresso dei Poteri Locali e Regionali del Consiglio d'Europa, per mettere a punto e definire linee d'azione comuni che contribuiscano alla conoscenza dei paesaggi europei, al consolidamento della loro identità naturale e culturale, all'individuazione di strumenti e interventi diversificati per la loro conservazione, protezione, creazione, gestione attiva. Lo studio è stato svolto con specifico riferimento al tema della tutela paesistica per rispondere ai seguenti obiettivi: -la comprensione delle interrelazioni esistenti tra sistemi naturali e sistemi antropici che connotano il paesaggio; -la lettura/conoscenza/interpretazione del paesaggio come processo dinamico ad evoluzione continua (con particolare attenzione ai processi antropici), che contiene le testimonianze del passato e le indicazioni per le trasformazioni future; -la comprensione dei processi di trasformazione e sviluppo del paesaggio necessaria per la definizione di strumenti utili alla descrizione e gestione di tali trasformazioni; -la definizione di indirizzi di pianificazione coerenti con i caratteri strutturali dell'area.

This book presents the results of research carried out by the author over the three years of the PhD in Landscape Design at Florence University. The first part of the work focuses on the theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of the agricultural landscape and the description of its component elements, the process of its formation and the evolution of its structure. The second part represents a practical application of these observations, with an original elaboration of the relations that have given rise to the various types of agricultural landscape into which the Roman countryside can be broken down. In short, the scope of the research is to set into relation a cognitive model of the agrarian landscape with a specific territorial framework rich in emblematic landscape situations, setting itself the objective of testing the feasibility of the application of individual interpretations and proposals, and of reappraising the role of the agrarian landscape within the current process of environmental and landscape redevelopment.
