Excerpt from Geological Sketch of the Province of Cadiz The Province of Cadiz occupies the southern extremity of the Iberian Peninsula. It extends from 36 to 37 N. Lat. and from 1 25 to 2 45 W. Long, of the Madrid Meridian. Its total surface amounts to 7.275 square kilometers. From the mouth of the Guadalquivir to the straits of Gibraltar its coasts form a series of parallel lines receding towards the east and constantly alineated from N.N.W. to S.S.E. whilst from Tarifa to the Bay of Gibraltar they take exactly an opposite direction. This constant direction of the western coast is, as it will be seen in the sequel, intimately connected with one of the most important geological phenomena to be observed in this region. The climate of this Province is considerably cooler than that which it might be inferred would correspond to its latitude. The mean temperature of the coast is scarcely higher than 17 5 centigrade, consequently the isothermal line of 20 centigrade, which touches in the Algarbes and in the Province of Malaga, describes a great curve the concavity of which follows the direction of the coast. The annexed tables show the result of the Meteorological observations taken at the Observatory of San Fernando and at Tarifa from the year 1866 to 1870. Excerpt from Geological Sketches His edition of the Geological Sketches offers nothing new to the public. Taken in connection with the former one, it only pre sents in a permanent form and in their original sequence all the geological and glacial papers contributed by Professor Agassiz to the At lantic Monthly during a number of years. The series must still be considered as unfin ishod, since his own hope of adding to it a complete account of his investigations on the drift phenomena of our coast and its outlying islands was not fulfilled. The material, in the shape of rough notes and sketches, had long been accumulated, awaiting for careful revision the quiet hour which never came. Excerpt from Geological Sketches at Home and Abroad But above all, in these dark subterranean recesses lurked the remains of gigantic rep tiles and one of the quarrymen possessed a terrific tusk and some fragmentary scales, which he would have sold to my friends could their joint purse have supplied the stipulated price. The Spanish Coastal Systems written by Juan A. Morales and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-03 with Science categories.

This monograph presents the state of art of the geologic knowledge about the Spanish coast obtained through scientific research in the last 30 years. From a general point of view, coasts are the most quickly changing systems of the Earth. This is critical, since many human resources, such as the main part of economic and social activities, are located in the coastal areas. Especially in the case of Spain these coasts include cities, wide industrial areas (including harbor complexes), important ecologic systems, and our main economic resource: tourism. Understanding the dynamic functioning of each element of this coast is vital for correct future coastal management, so as to solve problems derived from bad plans developed in the last decades of the twentieth century. This is a valuable text for advanced graduate students and coastal researchers, which connects the specific dynamic functioning of the main Spanish coastal environments and their relationships with human activities.
