Excerpt from Geology of Colorado Ore Deposits This treatise contains the substance of a series of elementary lectures delivered by the author to the students of the Colorado State School of Mines. It is published with a view of meeting some of the needs of the general public, of the ordinary miner, and of the unscientific many, rather than with any idea of offer ing original matter for the discussion of the scientific few. The materials are derived partly from the writer's own researches, and largely from the most reliable resources available to him, such as the standard text-books and the valuable published reports of the United States Geological Survey. The writer having for a time been connected with that survey, knows full well how high a value is to be attached to those reports, which must remain for all time as a standard of reference for those interested in the geological relations of the mines of Colorado. The first part of the work contains a rough sketch of general Geology, for the benefit of those who are not familiar with the terms used in this science. The sketch is further applied to the local geology of Colorado. The second part refers to the phe domena of veins and ores, and their surroundings, as illustrated by Colorado. Excerpt from Geology and Ore Deposits of the Breckenridge District, Colorado A notable feature of the Continental Divide east of Breckenridge is the fact that much of it coincides with a gently rolling upland, which is evidently a remnant of a much older topog raphy than that represented by the cirques and ravines notching its edges. S. H. Ball 3 describes what appears to have been originally a part of the same upland, in the Georgetown quadrangle, whose southwest corner (latitude 39° longitude 105° lies 10 miles due east of the mouth of Georgia Gulch (pl. I, in pocket). Ball concluded that this upland dates from late Tertiary time, which is probably a moderate estimate of its antiquity. The area covered is something over fifty square miles. Four mining camm lie within the district under consideration. These are Pl atoro, Summitville, Stunner, and Jasper. Platoro, situated on the Conejos river, lies in the southeast corner; Summit ville in the extreme northwest, and Jasper in the extreme north east corners of the mapped area. Excerpt from Geology of Western Ore Deposits This second edition is the result partly of the success of the first, but mainly of a desire felt by the author to bring his subject up to date. It is now over ten years since the earlier edition was written, and the science of geology, the development of mines and the rapid discoveries of new regions have advanced at such a pace that what then appeared as new is now commonplace. An example is the discovery and development of Cripple Creek, a district then in its infancy, receiving but scant attention in the original work. The same has been the case with many other mining camps, in Colorado and elsewhere. It has been the writers object to illustrate the principles of mining geology rather than to dilate on any particular rich or noted mine. If a small mine illustrates some important geological or other interesting feature in the science of mining, attention is given to that mine rather than to its more noted neighbor. Preference is given to Colorados mines because the writer ds more familiar with them, and they well illustrate the leading principles. Those outside of Colorado are selected and described as enlarging on principles previously discussed. The first part of the book relates to general features of mining geology.
