Due to poor and weak resistant shear and tensile capacity of naturally occurring soft soils, materials that are resistant to shear and tensile strain, such as geofibers (flexible polymeric fibers) can be added to soft soils in order to enhance their combined mechanical behavior. The analysis and design method of geofiber-reinforced soft soils is developed on the basis of the limit equilibrium and structural---type approaches (the kinematic approach of limit analysis) where the soft soil and the reinforcement material are studied as two separate structural constituents. However, the above-mentioned approaches cannot be applied to analyze the stress distribution, deformation and failure processes in any combined geofiber-reinforced soft soils. Therefore, in the dissertation, geofiber reinforced soft soils are viewed as a composite material. The continuum mechanics approach of an equivalent homogeneous material is applied to the analysis of the stress distribution and deformation processes of geofiber reinforced soft soils. In the dissertation, a new nonlinear elastoplastic stress vs. strain relationship of geofiber reinforced soils under static loading is presented based upon the behaviors of soil and geofiber, and the mechanical interaction between soil and geofibers. The reinforced mechanism of the inclusion of short geofiber material is determined by geofiber type, geofiber length, aspect ratio, geofiber content, and orientation. The soils are reinforced through the mechanical interaction between soil and geofiber. The theory of elastoplastic mechanics is employed to model the stress distribution and deformation process under static loading. A homogenization procedure is used throughout the analysis. These behaviors include the stress vs. strain relationship, failure criteria, flow criteria, and plastic deformation. The factors influencing these behaviors are primarily soil properties, geofiber properties, geofiber geometry, and geofiber distribution in the soil. In order to check the reasonableness, reliability, and accuracy of the model, laboratory tests under static loading are performed on specimens with different geofiber fractions. These test results are employed to investigate the stress vs. strain relationship and strength of geofiber reinforced soil. A numerical simulation of test samples has been conducted. The results of the model prediction are in good agreement with the actual test results.-- Abstract.
