A presente obra é uma versão derivada de uma pesquisa de doutoramento, realizada no Instituto de Geociências da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), sob o título Geopolítica, defesa e segurança internacional: as organizações de cooperação em defesa e o caso da América do Sul. Optou-se, por motivos didáticos, em subdividir a pesquisa original em duas partes, as quais deram origem a dois livros: · Geopolítica da Segurança Internacional: A Ótica das Organizações de Cooperação em Defesa; · Geopolítica da Segurança Internacional: A Ótica Regional da América do Sul. Os resultados obtidos no desenvolvimento da pesquisa foram organizados em duas temáticas que se complementam, a primeira de abrangência global e a segunda com enfoque regional. Porém, em ambos os casos, com foco no processo de formação e desenvolvimento das organizações de cooperação em Defesa. Desta feita, no primeiro livro existe foco ao âmbito regional sul-americano, assim como no segundo livro ao âmbito global. Fica o ensejo, por meio dos campos epistemológicos da Geografia Política e da Geopolítica, para contribuir com relevantes discussões acerca das questões que envolvem o poder mundial e regional em um mundo que, ao contrário do ideário de estabilidade e paz que poderia ter sido suposto após o fim da Guerra Fria, encontra-se décadas posteriores em um recrudescido contexto sistêmico, permeado por dinâmicas de conflitos e que conduzem a uma situação de pendular (in)segurança internacional.

Peace and War by Raymond Aron is one of the greatest books ever written on international relations. Aron's starting point is the state of nature that exists between nations, a condition that differs essentially from the civil state that holds within political communities. In Reluctant Crusaders, Colin Dueck examines patterns of change and continuity in American foreign policy strategy by looking at four major turning points: the periods following World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He shows how American cultural assumptions regarding liberal foreign policy goals, together with international pressures, have acted to push and pull U.S. policy in competing directions over time. The result is a book that combines an appreciation for the role of both power and culture in international affairs. The centerpiece of Dueck's book is his discussion of America's "grand strategy"--the identification and promotion of national goals overseas in the face of limited resources and potential resistance. One of the common criticisms of the Bush administration's grand strategy is that it has turned its back on a long-standing tradition of liberal internationalism in foreign affairs. But Dueck argues that these criticisms misinterpret America's liberal internationalist tradition. In reality, Bush's grand strategy since 9/11 has been heavily influenced by traditional American foreign policy assumptions. While liberal internationalists argue that the United States should promote an international system characterized by democratic governments and open markets, Dueck contends, these same internationalists tend to define American interests in broad, expansive, and idealistic terms, without always admitting the necessary costs and risks of such a grand vision. The outcome is often sweeping goals, pursued by disproportionately limited means.

Does growing economic interdependence among great powers increase or decrease the chance of conflict and war? Liberals argue that the benefits of trade give states an incentive to stay peaceful. Realists contend that trade compels states to struggle for vital raw materials and markets. Moving beyond the stale liberal-realist debate, Economic Interdependence and War lays out a dynamic theory of expectations that shows under what specific conditions interstate commerce will reduce or heighten the risk of conflict between nations. Taking a broad look at cases spanning two centuries, from the Napoleonic and Crimean wars to the more recent Cold War crises, Dale Copeland demonstrates that when leaders have positive expectations of the future trade environment, they want to remain at peace in order to secure the economic benefits that enhance long-term power. When, however, these expectations turn negative, leaders are likely to fear a loss of access to raw materials and markets, giving them more incentive to initiate crises to protect their commercial interests.
