Als ‚den durchschnittlichen deutschen Schriftsteller des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts‘ hat sich Georg Forster einmal bezeichnet. In zweierlei Hinsicht war er das gewiss nicht: Kein anderer deutscher Schriftsteller hat an James Cooks zweiter Reise um die Welt teilgenommen, kein anderer wurde Deputierter im Konvent. Forsters Schriften fordern zu einer Bestimmung der Stellung heraus, die einem noch nicht als Nationalstaat konstituierten Deutschland in Europa und seiner Expansion über die außereuropäische Welt zugeschrieben wird. Der Entdeckungsreisende Forster und der revolutionäre Demokrat Forster sind in der Rezeptionsgeschichte kaum je zugleich ‚entdeckt‘ worden. Die leitende Frage der in diesem Band zusammengefassten Studien erschließt das Gesamtwerk von Forster in der Breite seiner Genres, indem einzelne Aspekte des Generalthemas Deutschland, Europa und die Welt fokussiert werden: Öffentlichkeit und Adressaten, Ästhetik und geschichtsphilosophische Reflexion, Revolution als Emanzipation – auch der Kolonien. Die einschlägigen Schriften Forsters werden in ihren Beziehungen zur deutschen Literatur der siebziger bis neunziger Jahre des 18. Jahrhunderts analysiert: von Wieland über Herder und Goethe bis zu Schiller und Friedrich Schlegel.

Since Germany became a colonial power relatively late, postcolonial theorists and histories of colonialism have thus far paid little attention to it. Uncovering Germany’s colonial legacy and imagination, Susanne Zantop reveals the significance of colonial fantasies—a kind of colonialism without colonies—in the formation of German national identity. Through readings of historical, anthropological, literary, and popular texts, Zantop explores imaginary colonial encounters of "Germans" with "natives" in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century literature, and shows how these colonial fantasies acted as a rehearsal for actual colonial ventures in Africa, South America, and the Pacific. From as early as the sixteenth century, Germans preoccupied themselves with an imaginary drive for colonial conquest and possession that eventually grew into a collective obsession. Zantop illustrates the gendered character of Germany’s colonial imagination through critical readings of popular novels, plays, and travel literature that imagine sexual conquest and surrender in colonial territory—or love and blissful domestic relations between colonizer and colonized. She looks at scientific articles, philosophical essays, and political pamphlets that helped create a racist colonial discourse and demonstrates that from its earliest manifestations, the German colonial imagination contained ideas about a specifically German national identity, different from, if not superior to, most others.

Als Bezugspunkt und Folie vielfältiger, vor allem bürgerlicher Entwürfe, die, von der Sozial- bis hin zur Gartenordnung, gegen eine kulturelle Hegemonie Frankreichs gerichtet waren, konnte England bis zum Ende der 1780er Jahre einen festen Platz im Diskurs der deutschen Eliten beanspruchen. Mit der Französischen Revolution jedoch ging die Konjunktur der aufklärerischen Anglophilie ihrem Ende entgegen. In dem Maße, wie das Wissen über Großbritannien zunahm, wurden deutlicher als zuvor auch die Mängel der englischen Staats-, Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsverfassung thematisiert. Einer deutschen Neubelebung des Interesses an Großbritannien sowohl im Sinne begeisterter Aneignung wie enttäuschter Abwehr stand auf englischer Seite jenseits von herablassender Kuriosität eine erste, tastende Hinwendung zur deutschen Philosophie, Literatur und Tondichtung der Romantik gegenüber, die rasch an Dynamik gewann. Damit war der Beginn noch immer asymmetrischer, aber doch zunehmend wechselseitiger kultureller Beziehungen markiert. Unter den Vorzeichen disziplinärer und methodischer Offenheit vertiefen die Beiträge des Sammelbandes Einzelaspekte dieser Wechselbeziehungen und ihrer sozialen Träger. Thematisiert werden Phänomene der Kulturbegegnung auf einer Skala von oberflächlicher Anregung über den nachhaltigen Transfer bis hin zu Formen der Reziprozität. In kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive entsteht damit ein präzises und differenziertes Bild des beschleunigten Wandels, dem die britisch-deutschen Austauschbeziehungen von 1770 bis 1840 unterlagen.

In the spring of 1945, Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, President Edvard Benes, and Marshal Josip Broz Tito stood as examples of the complete rupture between the Germans and Austrians on the one hand, and the Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks on the other. The total break that occurred in World War II with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and even genocides (particularly against the Jews and "Gypsies") had a long pre-history, beginning with violent nationalist clashes in the Habsburg Monarchy during the revolutions of 1848/49. Therefore, this monograph - based on a broad range of international primary and secondary sources - explores the development of the political, legal, economic, social, and cultural "communities of conflict" within Austria-Hungary, especially in the Bohemian and South Slavic countries, the making of the Paris Peace Treaties in 1919/20 by violating President Wilson's principle of self-determination, particularly in drawing new borders and creating new economic units, and the perpetuated ethnic-national conflicts between Czechs and Germans, Slovaks and Magyars, Slovenes and Germans, Croats and Serbs as well as Serbs and Germans in the successor states, deepening the differences between the nations of East-Central Europe. Although many kings, presidents, chancellors, ministers, governors, diplomats, business tycoons, generals, Nazi-Gauleiter, higher SS and police leaders, and Communist functionaries have appeared as historical actors in the 170 years of East-Central and Southeastern European history, Hitler, Benes, and Tito remain especially present in historical memory at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
