Diese Arbeit hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, eine vergleichende Untersuchung der Werke von Kurt Breysig, Walther Rathenau und Oswald Spengler durchzuführen. Die Perspektive, aus der die Werkanalyse erfolgt, stellt den Begriff des Geschichtsdenkens in den Mittelpunkt und mithin die zentrale Frage des «Wohin der Menschheitsgeschichte», die die intellektuelle Laufbahn der drei Protagonisten von Anfang an bestimmte. Die Untersuchung ist in drei Teile gegliedert; der erste befaßt sich mit der Epoche vor 1918 und die beiden weiteren mit der Epoche nach 1918. Im ersten Teil wird untersucht, wie sich angesichts der damaligen Umwälzungen (heute würde man den Ausdruck «Globalisierung» wählen) bei den drei Autoren Zeitdiagnose und Kulturkritik mit Entwürfen zu einer Kulturmorphologie bzw. zu einem Vergleich der Kulturen verbanden. Im zweiten Teil wird überprüft, ob und wie innerhalb des völlig neuen Rahmens, der durch die deutsche Niederlage und die Russische Revolution geschaffen wurde, die «Stufentheorien» und die «Kulturphilosophie» aus der Zeit vor 1918 in der Nachkriegszeit weiterlebten und das Denken und Handeln der Geschichtsdenker und politischen Schriftsteller bestimmten. Der dritte Teil der Arbeit will die verschiedenen Formen der Rezeption Spenglers und Rathenaus in Italien von 1918 bis 1945 beleuchten: die liberale, die negativ-germanozentrische und nicht zuletzt die ideologische. Hierbei setzt sich der Autor auch mit dem höchst paradoxen Tatbestand auseinander, daß kurz vor der Machtergreifung der «Cäsar» Benito Mussolini nicht Oswald Spengler, dem Lobredner des Cäsarismus, einen Besuch abstattete, sondern Walther Rathenau.
