Germaine Krull (1897-1985) made a name for herself in avant-garde photography in the period between the two World Wars. After attending photography school in Munich, she launched her career in Berlin, and later worked in Paris and Monte Carlo. During World War II, her leftist political beliefs led her to spend time in Brazil and French Equatorial Africa, and afterward she traveled to Southeast Asia and later settled in Northern India. She was a remarkable artist who was a pioneer in her field, particularly in regard to the development of the photographic book and photojournalism. This exhibition catalogue reveals how Krull balanced her avant-garde, artistic vision and her active role in the media, highlighting more than 150 images produced between 1924 and 1945, some of which appeared in her monographic books and others of which were produced for commercial publication. This major overview of Krull's work and career sheds new light on one of the great female photographers of the 20th century. Between 1919 and 1938, the photographer Germaine Krull (1897-1985) was one of the leading practitioners in her field, contributing work to the most celebrated journals of her time, publishing some of the first fully realized photo books, and personifying the characteristics of the Neue Frau, the Weimar Republic (1918-33) version of the strong-willed modern female subject. During this time, Krull also worked extensively to engage the genre of the female nude. Through her studies, she extrapolated from characteristics inherent to the traditional depiction of female nudes in the history of art. In one such work, Études de nu (Nude studies) a portfolio containing 24 loose photographs published in 1930, a short statement Krull included among two folded text pages explained her intentions. But it also outlined her personal meanings for the work. While this writing has been too often used as a description for Krull’s entire oeuvre, it is important to adequately consider her writing in relation to the work for which it was created. Such consideration allows us to understand what Krull’s work focusing on the female form meant in the context of the time in which it was produced: a period of intense social change and re-definition. Through this investigation, study can begin on the most consistent and extensive portion of Krull’s photographic output of the interwar period. It is this output that has gone ignored in the existing scholarship. Comparing Études de nu to the work of other photographers addressing similar subject matter during this time reveals Krull’s points of departure from the genre of the nude. These departures were generated by differences within traditional subject-object distinctions in the history of art as well as those opening up in broader society under Weimar. Through analysis of Études de nu and the statement Krull included in the portfolio this thesis highlights the social advancements women were realizing between the two world wars and their subversion of the male gaze.
