German Classicism is a powerful architectural force that is only now being fully studied. As this extensively illustrated book shows, palaces, private houses, public buildings, and urban planning all received patronage on a scale that could not be paralleled in other countries. Of the host of architects whose genius was given such superb opportunities in the years 1740 to 1840, only Karl Freidrich Schinkel's name has become widely known; yet this book points out, all over Germany rulers were dramatically transforming their capitals, and the achievements of Weinbrenner at Karlsruhe, Moller at Darmstadt, or Klenze at Munich are by any standards astonishing. The first part of the book is by David Watkin, a leading British authority on the Classical Revival. He provides a historical account that sets German Neoclassicism in its regional and political context, and notes the impact of France and England and the Franco-Prussian style before Schinkel. He discusses Schinkel's own work, that of Leo von Klenze, and Neoclassicism in North and South Germany. The book's second part consists of an index of buildings prepared by Tilman Mellinghoff. Here every important Neoclassical building (both existing and destroyed) is listed and described under its location. The index is an invaluable source of information available nowhere else in English. David Watkin is a Fellow of Peterhouse and a University Lecturer in History of Art at Cambridge University. Tilman Mellinghoff is an Assistant Lecturer at the Universities of Cologne and Bonn.

This book vividly illustrates the ways in which buildings designed by many of Germany's most celebrated twentieth century architects were embedded in widely held beliefs about the power of architecture to influence society. German Architecture for a Mass Audience also demonstrates the way in which these modernist ideas have been challenged and transformed, most recently in the rebuilding of central Berlin.

This title was first published in 2002: In the second half of the 18th century, philosophy provided the fundamental characteristics of architechture. The architects of the 19th century then introduced the empirical comparative study of buildings. This phenomenon has usually been regarded exclusively in terms of historicism, but this is to underestimate the fact that they were architects. The problems for which they sought solutions did not belong to the past, but were part of their own age or the future. The architecture of the past was, to the 19th-century architect, significant to a large degree as a silent witness of a bygone era - a representation of beauty. Historical architecture provided study material for their inquiries into the aesthetic "laws" that they hoped would give the 19th century a splendid contemporary architecture. The art of building, as a way of visibly edifying society, was the most important of all the arts, with architectural theory showing the way to this lofty purpose. This book takes this as a starting point. Focusing on place as well as time, the text discusses the Dutch architects who contributed to this idea, discussing several of the most important, but ultimately seeing their activities, not as the cause, but the expression of movements that continuously changed the face of architecture. The particularly "Dutch" nature of architecture took "visual beauty" to result from the visible success of technical intelligence and creativity rather than philosophy and aesthetics. The grand-19th century themes discussed in the book are, the author suggests, somewhat "un-Dutch", originating as they did from an idealist, intellectual tradition.

Winckelmann S Philosophy Of Art written by John Harry North and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-16 with Art categories.

It is the aim of this work to examine the pivotal role of Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717–1768) as a judge of classical sculpture and as a major contributor to German art criticism. John Harry North seeks to identify the key features of his treatment of classical beauty, particularly in his famous descriptions of large-scale classical sculpture. Five case studies are offered to demonstrate the academic classicism that formed the core of his philosophy of art. North aims to establish Winckelmann’s place in the development of the German language. His prose contributed to a literary style that was suitable for the expression of an emotional response to visual experiences. His use of rhetoric in the assessment of classical art, however, make his judgements propagandist rather than analytical. The published works of Winckelmann, his draft essays and his collected private correspondence are advanced as criteria in the evaluation of his impact on the development of German classicism that culminated in the Weimar group of poets and writers. His Grecophile enthusiasm, however, led him to introduce stylistic categories in the development of classical marble sculpture that are no longer regarded as truly reflecting the evolution of Greco-Roman art. Thus his historicity and his classification of styles remain in doubt. Winckelmann proposed that the training of modern artists should concentrate on the observation and imitation of classical models instead of looking to nature as the source of inspiration. This plan succeeded to some extent in the generation that followed his untimely death. Throughout the succeeding century, artists and their sponsors did favour classical models and developed stylistic classicism in European freestanding sculpture, in painting and in architecture.
