The twentieth-century history of few countries has been so profoundly marked by breaks, discontinuities, and ruptures as has Germany's--the radical breaks between the Wilhelmine empire, the Weimar Republic, and the National Socialist period; the "end of history" in 1945 and the dual reconstruction from "Year Zero," followed by the reunification of post-1989 German. This special issue of South Atlantic Quarterly focuses on the many dimensions of these discontinuities--social, political, cultural, aesthetic, psychological, and physical--as well as the continuities that are equally, if less apparently, implied by them. The contributions presented here include Fredric Jameson's "Ramblings in Old Berlin," Günter Grass's "Lonesome Capitalism," and Peter Weiss's "Aesthetics of Resistance." Among the topics discussed in the volume are the debate over Holocaust memorials in Germany and the significance of their connections to the German past, the problematic continuity that identifies the new unified Germany with the former Federal Republic; the dangers to women posed by the neoliberal project; the legacy of the avant-garde in today's media theory; Ars nova and Doktor Faustus; nostalgia for the old German Democratic Republic; and reflections on traumatic memory and history as trauma. Ulrich Baer, Michael Geyer, Günter Grass, Frigga Haug, Julia Hell, Fredric Jameson, Juliet Koss, Andreas Michel, Martin Morris, Arkady Plotnitsky, Pierra Vidal-Naquet, Peter Weiss, James E. Young

From Kaiserreich To Third Reich written by Fritz Fischer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-26 with History categories.

Originally published in English in 1986, this book offers a concise summary of the contribution Fritz Fischer and his school made to German historiography in the 20th century and in particular draws attention to continuity in the development and power structures of the German Reich between 1871 and 1945. After 1866 the traditional elites wanted to avoid fundamental changes in society, expecting a victorious war to secure their own position at home and to broaden the European base of the German Reich. Even as the Blitzkrieg expectations foundered, these ambitions persisted beyond 1918. In the face of working-class hostility, these elites were unable to mobilize mass support for their interests, but Hitler fashioned a mass party. The alliance between these unequal partners led to the Third Reich but with its collapse in 1945 the Prusso-German Reich came to an end. Only with the German Federal Republic did the liberal-democratic traditions of German history again come into their own.

Arthur Spiethoff And The German Historical School written by Vitantonio Gioia and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024 with Business & Economics categories.

"Arthur Spiethoff (1873-1957), an economist of the German Historical School of Economics, is best known for his theory of the business cycle. Despite Spiethoff calling for a unified reading of his work, his epistemological thinking has received less attention. This book addresses that gap by analysing Spiethoff's theory of the business cycle in the light of his epistemological views. Putting Spiethoff's work in context, the book also investigates the most significant features of the evolution of the "research programme" of the German Historical School of Economics, with particular reference to the relationships between Schmoller, Sombart, Weber and Spiethoff. In addition, Spiethoff's work is compared with some of the scientific orientations of the current debates: on the epistemological side, the book examines the relationship between Spiethoff's views and some contemporary thinking on scientific realism, as well as methodological pluralism in social sciences. And, more broadly, it emphasises the analytical relevance of the historical approach in explaining the economic imbalances of contemporary capitalism, questioning the idea, widespread in the neoclassical approach, that taking historical specificities into account makes it hard to achieve a theoretically effective attitude. This book is a significant addition to the literature on the German Historical School of Economics and the history of economic thought, business cycle theory and macroeconomics more broadly"--
