As seen in the New York Times Book Review. A December 2019 Indie Next Pick! Set against the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials of 1963, Annette Hess's international bestseller is a harrowing yet ultimately uplifting coming-of-age story about a young female translator--caught between societal and familial expectations and her unique ability to speak truth to power--as she fights to expose the dark truths of her nation's past. If everything your family told you was a lie, how far would you go to uncover the truth? For twenty-four-year-old Eva Bruhns, World War II is a foggy childhood memory. At the war's end, Frankfurt was a smoldering ruin, severely damaged by the Allied bombings. But that was two decades ago. Now it is 1963, and the city's streets, once cratered are smooth and paved. Shiny new stores replace scorched rubble. Eager for her wealthy suitor, Jürgen Schoormann, to propose, Eva dreams of starting a new life away from her parents and sister. But Eva's plans are turned upside down when a fiery investigator, David Miller, hires her as a translator for a war crimes trial. As she becomes more deeply involved in the Frankfurt Trials, Eva begins to question her family's silence on the war and her future. Why do her parents refuse to talk about what happened? What are they hiding? Does she really love Jürgen and will she be happy as a housewife? Though it means going against the wishes of her family and her lover, Eva, propelled by her own conscience , joins a team of fiery prosecutors determined to bring the Nazis to justice--a decision that will help change the present and the past of her nation.

Das Haus (The House) in East Berlin is the true story of two German families - one Jewish, the other not - whose paths first crossed in Nazi Germany and 70 years later again in the United States in the quest to have a house, which was located in the former East Germany, returned to its rightful owner. You will find out how the two heirs, who started out as antagonists in the 10-year struggle over the ownership of the house, ended up co-authors of this book. In fact, the turbulent history of 20th century Germany, from World War I through the Nazi era, the Soviet occupation of East Germany, the rise and fall of East Germany, all the way to the post-Cold War struggles to determine the rightful heirs to a property sold by a Jewish family to a member of the Nazi Party a half-century earlier, are all part of the story of Das Haus. What was it like for a six-year old boy to live in the house through the battle for Berlin as the Third Reich collapsed under the murderous onslaught of the Soviet Army to end World War II in Europe? How did the daughter of the Jewish owner of the house who had sold it to a German Nazi escape to England at the last minute and was also able to bring her young daughter to Britain? What was the role of "junkyard dog" lawyer? What was it like as the two families struggled -- unbeknown to each other -- to make their way to America and tried to rebuild their lives in the United States? Once the Berlin Wall came down and German unification took place, what was the struggle like as the heirs of the two families separately tried to have Das Haus returned to them? How did the German heir's diligent search for the Jewish heiress fare as he tried to work out a common approach to getting the house back? What came as the biggest shock of the odyssey to the German heir as he found out what happened within two years after his parents had purchased Das Haus? Was what the German Gentile heir saw as an interminable back-and-forth with the Jewish heiress actually her struggle with her Jewish culture? Did trying to get the the house back cause her to reexamine her Jewish heritage? How did the German heir deal with the fact that his father had been a Nazi, albeit only a "nominal" Nazi party member according to his denazification proceedings? But was he the Nazi who kept threatening the Jewish owner of the house with burning it down unless he received monthly payoff? LONGLISTED FOR THE CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE LONGLISTED FOR THE HWA NON-FICTION CROWN 'A moving, powerful and highly innovative sidelight on the fall of Communism in East Germany through punk style and music. This is a complete original' HWA Non-Fiction Crown Judges 'A thrilling and essential social history that details the rebellious youth movement that helped change the world' Rolling Stone 'A riveting and inspiring history of punk's hard-fought struggle in East Germany' New York Times 'Wildly entertaining' Vogue THE SECRET HISTORY OF PUNKS IN EAST GERMANY It began with a handful of East Berlin teens who heard the Sex Pistols on a British military radio broadcast to troops in West Berlin, and it ended with the collapse of the East German dictatorship. Punk rock was a life-changing discovery: in an authoritarian state where the future was preordained, punk, with its rejection of society and DIY approach to building a new one, planted the seeds for revolution. As these kids began to form bands, they also became more visible, and security forces - including the dreaded secret police, the Stasi - targeted them. They were spied on by friends and family; they were expelled from schools and fired from jobs; they were beaten by police and imprisoned. But instead of conforming, the punks fought back, playing an indispensable role in the underground movement that helped bring down the Berlin Wall. Rollicking, cinematic and thrillingly topical, this secret history brings to life the young men and women who successfully fought authoritarianism three chords at a time. Burning Down the Haus is a fiery testament to the irrepressible spirit of revolution. 'Original and inspiring . . . an important work of Cold War cultural history' Wall Street Journal

Heinz Uwe Haus On Culture And Politics written by Daniel Meyer-Dinkgräfe and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-27 with Performing Arts categories.

The late 1980s saw the dissolution of the Iron Curtain and the development of democracy in Eastern European countries that had been oppressed by a range of varieties of communist totalitarian regimes. In Germany, this development led to the abolition of the so-called German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the re-unification of Germany. Heinz-Uwe Haus was one of the leading voices of the movement credited with being instrumental in the collapse of communism in the GDR. In addition, as a leading theatre director in GDR times and beyond, his thinking and action have always combined politics and theatre and the arts overall. In this book, Haus provides a unique narrative of the context before German unification, unification itself, and the aftermath of unification across the decades since. He explores the difficulties on the way, from the perspective of the insider. Haus then widens the context from post-unification Germany to encompass issues of broader current relevance, such as Europe, America and Islam. Theatre provides the conceptual framework for this wide-ranging debate.

'Gripping' - Telegraph 'Brilliant' - Sunday Times 'Riveting' - Guardian The devastating rediscovered classic written from the horrors of Nazi Germany, as one Jewish man attempts to flee persecution in the wake of Kristallnacht BERLIN, NOVEMBER 1938. With storm troopers battering against his door, Otto Silbermann must flee out the back of his own home. He emerges onto streets thrumming with violence: it is Kristallnacht, and synagogues are being burnt, Jews rounded up and their businesses destroyed. Turned away from establishments he had long patronised, betrayed by friends and colleagues, Otto finds his life as a respected businessman has dissolved overnight. Desperately trying to conceal his Jewish identity, he takes train after train across Germany in a race to escape this homeland that is no longer home. Twenty-three-year-old Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz wrote The Passenger at breakneck speed in 1938, fresh in the wake of the Kristallnacht pogroms, and his prose flies at the same pace. Shot through with Hitckcockian tension, The Passenger is a blisteringly immediate story of flight and survival in Nazi Germany.
