Excerpt from Germany and the War: A Sermon "Thou, Oh King, art a King of Kings." Daniel 2:37. The German Kaiser rules over more kings than ever stood at the foot of Nebuchadnezzar's throne. In the confederation of which he is the chief, there are four kings, including himself, Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony and Wurtemberg. There are six Grand Duchies - each Grand Duke is almost a king: one more step up and he sits on his own throne; five Duchies, seven principalities, three free cities - Bremen, Hamburg and Lubeck; and one imperial province, Alsace-Lorraine. World War I changed Karl Barth's theology forever. In this book William Klempa presents for the first time in English thirteen sermons that offer Barth's unique view and commentary on the Great War. Barth saw the war as “a unique time of God,†believing it to represent God's judgment on militarism. The sermons reveal a deep strain of theological wrestling with the war's meaning, as Barth comes to see the conflict as the logical outcome of all human attempts to create God in our own image. As it demonstrates a decisive shift in Barth's early theology, this volume is essential for anyone who wishes to understand the twentieth century's greatest theologian.

God, Germany, and Britain in the Great War compares the patriotic preaching of two major combatants in World War II--Germany and Great Britain. The core material for the study is the war sermons of the British and German clergy of 1914-1918, but the author also employs numerous speeches, books, addresses, pamphlets, and journal articles to support his arguments. As Hoover demonstrates, the Protestant churchmen played a significant role in the First World War as religion became a key ingredient in the war fever experienced on both sides. Religious historians as well as historians of World War I will find Hoover's study both enlightening and provocative reading. Hoover explores the attacks made by each nation's clergy on the enemy and analyzes the public's responses to these attacks. Based on his close readings of the sermons, Hoover shows that ministers from each nation repeatedly stressed the national flaws of the opponent, predicting that these flaws would have to be eradicated before peace could be restored. Both found religious justification for their participation in the war, Hoover notes, in the belief that the other nation had sinned in special ways. Each defended the just war theory, carrying the justification of the ancient thesis to new and, argues Hoover, possibly invalid heights. In his final chapter, Hoover offers a measured critique of Christian nationalism summarizing its dangers and identifying implications for the future.

Life Can Begin Again written by Helmut Thielicke and has been published by Lutterworth Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-24 with Religion categories.

Christians have always turned to the Sermon on the Mount for inspiration. In Life Can Begin Again, Helmut Thielicke, himself one of the great preachers of the twentieth century, comes to grips with what is often seen as a collection of lovely but impossible ideals. Thielicke makes it clear that the Sermon on the Mount can never be understood if, even for a moment, we forget the person of the Preacher of the Sermon. For without the person and work of Jesus Christ the marvellous words of the Beatitudes and the injunctions that follow them are the most radical and devastating distillation of God's claims that can be conceived - they leave us in utter hopeless dismay. Only through Christ can these words of the law become the glorious Gospel that promises a new life. Once again, as in his other best-selling works How the World Began and The Prayer that Spans the World, Thielicke brings profoundly biblical religion alive for modern readers.

The question of where we come from and where we are going is one of the elementary challenges of life. Perhaps it is the question of life. Only when we get an answer to it do we learn who we are. So begins How the World Began, a book that asks themost fundamental of all questions: who are we? And what did God intend us to be? Despite - perhaps even because of - the immense technological advances of our time, and the frightful consequences for the human race of the misuse of that power, humanity is brought face-to-face time and again with the essential problem that has haunted us since the beginning of time: the mystery of good and evil. Helmut Thielicke's work in these sermons on the first eleven chapters of Genesis is thought-provokingand exceptionally powerful.

'The Lord's Prayer can be spoken at the cradle or the grave. It can rise from the altars of great cathedrals and from the dark hovels of those who eat their bread with tears. It can be prayed at weddings and on the gallows. All seven colours of our life are contained in it, and so there is never a time when we are left alone.' In these sermons delivered in the shattered city of Stuttgart during the last days of the war, Helmut Thielicke examined the Lord's Prayer phrase by phrase, drawing from it both immediate comfort and inspiration for the future. As he expounded upon the inner meaning of the familiar phrases, he enabled his despairing congregation to share in this promise of hope - to see the world in a new way, through prayer. Today, for those who are prepared to listen, his words still carry the same power.
