Cross-linguistic research is a fruitful field of language inquiry that has benefited enormously from the use of corpora. As sources of linguistic data of various kinds and as tools for language processing, corpora have shaped the development of cross-linguistic research, enabling both language description and practical applications. This volume contains twelve studies that emphasize the usefulness and usability of parallel corpora in accurately exploring the structure and use of seven under-researched languages and language varieties. Wortbildung und Phraseologie des Deutschen sind streng systematisch organisiert. Zoja Berketovas Einführung in die lexikologischen Grundlagen des modernen Deutsch stellt dieses System vor. An den Anfang ihrer Überlegungen stellt Zoja Berketova die universellen Worteigenschaften Motivierung und Willkürlichkeit (Arbitrarität), die ganz unterschiedliche Ansätze zur Systematisierung des Wortschatzes bedingen. Die folgende semasiologische Systembeschreibung des Wortschatzes basiert auf der semantischen und wortbildenden Motivierung. Berketova nimmt zudem extralinguistische Merkmale in den Blick. Die Quelle ihrer onomasiologischen Systembeschreibung des Vokabulars sind logische Kriterien. In wenigen Sprachen gibt es so viele Komposita wie im Deutschen. Dieses typologische Merkmal bietet einen vielversprechenden Ansatz zur Systematisierung der Sprache auf lexikalischer Ebene und damit zur Erforschung der Kontinuität des semantischen Raumes im Deutschen. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht Zoja Berketova die Motiviertheit der Sprache auf paradigmatischer und syntagmatischer Ebene, also, wie sich die Bedeutung von Spracheinheiten in deren Form widerspiegelt. In ihre Analyse sind insgesamt 33 612 sehr unterschiedliche Lexeme eingeflossen – von Wurzelwörtern über Ableitungen bis hin zu Zusammensetzungen. 22 200 davon hat sie in sogenannte Motivationsfelder eingebunden. Durch deren hierarchische und parallele Vernetzung entsteht schließlich ein System – ein kontinuierlicher semantischer Raum, der belegt, dass die Lexik einer Sprache immer als etwas Ganzes zu betrachten ist.

Indonesia, the state with the largest Muslim population in the world, is in a process of continuous societal transformation. From the perspective of Media and Communication Studies, recent political developments towards an increasingly consolidated democratic system are of great interest. The comparison with Germany may seem unusual and asymmetrical. The countries differ with regard to the religious and cultural practices, and media and social developments are neither intertwined nor similar at first glance. A closer look, however, reveals structural similarities between Germany and Indonesia: dynamics and regressions of political transformation under pressure from radical political movements; hyper-modernization in parts of the economies and social life-worlds of post-modern urbanization; a heritage of genocides and cultural struggles over the multi-ethnic and multi-religious fabrics of society. The book deals with the role media play in the course of these political, economic and cultural transformations. Do they ‘follow’ or ‘lead’ the changes in political systems and societies? What can countries learn from each other if they step outside the usual ethnocentric comparisons and engage in a more intense global dialogue?
