Excerpt from Germany and Belgium Before and During the War Her acts go to show that the 'strategic plan of German military writers was identical with that of the Grand Staff, inasmuch as everybody knows that the Empire had multiplied railway lines of a purely strategic value in the district comprised between the Rhine and the frontiers of Belgium and Luxemburg with a view to the rapid concentration of her troops on those frontiers. The develop ment of these railway lines coincided with the creation of the huge camp at Elsenborn. What is more, everybody knows that Germany made persistent and strenuous efforts to obtain from Belgium the linking up of the Belgian railways with the German, more especially the connection malmedy-stavelot, and the build ing of a new railway line which, passing Vise and avoiding Liege, would have shortened the existing line which connects Aix-la Chapelle with central Belgium. So much for Germany's deeds. Let us now turn to her words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. ""Nothing is more unwise, on general principles, than to attempt to write about a war before that war is finished and before history has given it the justice of perspective. The campaign which began with the flight of the Belgian Government from Brussels and which culminated in the fall of Antwerp formed, however, a separate and distinct phase of the Greatest of Wars, and I feel that I should write of that campaign while its events are still sharp and clear in my memory and before the impressions it produced have begun to fade."" This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

"People screamed, cried, and groaned. Above the tumult I could distinguish the voices of small children. All this time the soldiers were singing.... Sometime after the first salvo, there was another round of fire and, once again, I was not hit. After this I heard fewer cries, save from time to time a small child calling its mother."?Félix Bourdon, survivor of a mass execution in Dinant, BelgiumIn August 1914, without any legitimate pretext, German soldiers killed nearly 6,000 Belgian noncombatants, including women and children, and burned some 25,000 homes and other buildings. Rehearsals is the first book to provide a detailed narrative history of the German invasion of Belgium as it affected civilians. Based on extensive eyewitness testimony, the book chronicles events in and around the towns of Liége, Aarschot, Andenne, Tamines, Dinant, and Leuven, where the worst of the German depredations occurred. Accounts of the killing, looting, and arson have long been dismissed as "atrocity propaganda," particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. Rehearsals examines the campaign by revisionists that led to voluminous and compelling testimony about German war crimes being discredited.Recently, the case has been made that the violence that came to a peak between August 19 and August 26, 1914, was the result of a spontaneous outbreak of German paranoia about civilian sharpshooters. In Rehearsals, Jeff Lipkes offers compelling evidence that the executions were in fact part of a deliberate campaign of terrorism ordered by military authorities. In his shocking account of events that have been largely overlooked by historians of World War I, Lipkes commemorates the heroism as well as the suffering of the Belgian victims of German aggression.

Experience And Memory Of The First World War In Belgium written by Geneviève Warland and has been published by Waxmann Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with History categories.

Due to its unprecedented violence and unexpected duration, the First World War generated many complex and tragic experiences, which over time have been reinterpreted. Connecting past experiences with current memories of the war - in order to revisit in an interdisciplinary way Belgium's archival and literary, as well as material and monumental war heritage - is the goal of this book which presents the outcomes of the research project Experiences and Memories of the Great War in Belgium (MEMEX WW1). The following topics as part of the historical, psychological and memory studies are addressed: emotions and writing strategies in a war context and attitudes towards the Germans based on the diaries of Belgian soldiers and scholars; the memory of the war in the two fort cities of Antwerp and Liege during the Interbellum; the literary reception of Tom Lanoye's No Man's Land and the impact of the reading of some poems to current Flemish students. Another issue concerning the social representations of the war investigates the representations of soldiers as heroes or as victims among young Europeans. As for the impact of war centenary commemoration events, they are analyzed firstly through the iconology of the First World War illustrated on stamps and secondly through the effects of exhibitions and documentaries on young Belgians.

In 1914 Swedish professor, writer, illustrator and adventurer Sven Hedin was granted a car and escort and given a comprehensive tour of the German Armies fighting in Belgium and France during September and October 1914. Hedin was given unfettered access to German armies and leadership. The resulting book, With the German Armies in the West, was quickly finished and published, originally in Swedish, in 1914 then swiftly translated and printed in early 1915 by John Lane of The Bodley Head Press, London, at a time when the events described in the book were still fresh.During his battle-front tour, Hedin took the opportunity to roam around the Army's rear areas and to visit the frontline trench network. In the process he conducted many interviews, ranging from ordinary German privates to the most senior commanders and also with British and French POWs. He was an artist of great skill and was allowed to sketch many scenes depicting German infantry, cavalry, logistics and artillery batteries. He also documented the condition of post-August 1914 Belgium and described the situation in a very different light to the febrile tones of most neutral sources. This invaluable study of the Kaiser's Army in the early stages of the First World War is a great addition to the literature of the Great War providing a rare glimpse into the German Army of 1914.

The Great War In Belgium And The Netherlands written by Felicity Rash and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-02 with History categories.

This book addresses the many avenues that are still left unexplored when it comes to our understanding of the First World War in the Low Countries. With the ongoing the centenary of the Great War, many events have been organized in the United Kingdom to commemorate its military events, its socio-political consequences, and its cultural legacy. Of these events, very few have paid attention to the fates of Belgium or the Netherlands, even though it was the invasion of Belgium in August 1914 that was the catalyst for Great Britain declaring war. The occupation of Belgium had long-term consequences for its people, but much of the military and social history of the Western Front concentrates on northern France, and the Netherlands is largely forgotten as a nation affected by the First World War. By opening the field beyond the military and beyond the front, this collection explores the interdisciplinary and international nature of the Great War.

Excerpt from The Destruction of Belgium: Germany's Confession and Avoidance In essentials their stories never vary. Every massacre of inhabitants, every organised shooting of "hostages," every wiping out of groups of people or individuals, every shelling, burning and destruction of entire towns and villages, or of single houses, always had its origin in the misdeeds of "Franc tireurs." It must have occurred to most people that members of the German Army in the circumstances of its invasion of Belgium would from time to time be attacked by unrestrained individual civilians. That, however, is not at all the case which the Germans set out to prove. They understand that isolated acts of that character do not warrant the infliction of collective and often vicarious punishment. They affirm that great masses of the civilian population of Belgium engaged in a "people's war" with them, and that this was done generally throughout the country, not merely with the connivance, but with the assistance of the Belgian Government and military authorities, and that only such repressive measures were taken by them as were legitimate, essential, and justified by the occasion. Before proceeding to examine the materials upon which this allegation is based, it is desirable to consider what is the charge made by the Belgians against the German Army, because the White Book is professedly an answer to the Belgian Report, and has no other object than to refute and overcome the "mendacious libels against the German Army," which are said to be contained in that document. The Commissioners appointed by the Belgian Government issued a series of Reports between August 28th, 1914, and January 20th, 1915. These reports, together with a most admirable and spirited preface by M. van Den Heuvel, a Belgian Minister of State; some extracts from the pastoral letter of Cardinal Mercier bearing on the subject of the German conduct in Belgium, and an appendix containing the advice given to civilians by M. Berryer, the Belgian Minister of the Interior, warning them that they must abstain from hostile action towards the Germans, formed the documents to which the German White Book purports to reply. The charges brought by the Belgian Commissioners against German officers and soldiers are pointed, precise, and definite. The reports give names, places, dates, and in many instances the number of people killed and of houses destroyed.
