Excerpt from Germinal The driver was standing with his back to the fire, a little old man, dressed in a purple wool jacket, on his head was an old rabbit-skin cap; while his horse, a large fawn-colored beast, waited motionless as stone, while they emptied the six cars which he had drawn up. This work was done by an assistant, a jolly fellow, red and healthy, who hurried little, pressing upon the lever with a heavy hand. Up there the wind was still more severe, a freezing wind, whose great regular blasts swept on like the blows of a scythe. Germinal [English Translation]: Large print By Emile Zola He was short, with an enormous neck, projecting calves and heels, and long arms, with massive hands falling to his knees. For the rest, like his horse, which stood immovable, without suffering from the wind, he seemed to be made of stone; he had no appearance of feeling either the cold or the gusts that whistled at his ears. When he coughed his throat was torn by a deep rasping; he spat at the foot of the basket and the earth was blackened. Excerpt from On Germinal Selection as a Source of Definite Variation The present paper was read in the first general meeting of the International Congress of Zoologists at Leyden on September 16, 1895. Several points, which for reasons of brevity were omitted when the paper was read, have been re-embodied in the text, and an Appendix has been added where a number of topics receive fuller treatment than could well be accorded to them in a lecture. The address was first printed in The Monist for January, 1896, and afterwards in a German pamphlet. The basal idea of the essay - the existence of Germinal Selection - was propounded by me some time since, but it is here for the first time fully set forth and tentatively shown to be the necessary complement of the process of selection. Knowing this factor, we remove, it seems to me, the patent contradiction of the assumption that the general fitness of organisms, or the adaptations necessary to their existence, are produced by accidental variations - a contradiction which formed a serious stumbling-block to the theory of selection. Though still assuming that the primary variations are "accidental," I yet hope to have demonstrated that an interior mechanism exists which compels them to go on increasing in a definite direction, the moment selection intervenes. Excerpt from On Germinal Transplantation in Vertebrates The curiosity Of zoologists has long been aroused to know whether the reproductive gland of a vertebrate can be successfully transplanted from the body of one individual to another; and, if so, whether the gland will thereafter function in its new environment; and, if it does, whether the nature of its products will remain unaltered. The fact has repeatedly been pointed out that experiments of this sort, if successful, should afford a crucial test of the Lamarckian and the Weismannian views, respectively, of the relation of the germinal substance to its environment and in particular to the body. Excerpt from Madeleine Ferat: A Realistic Novel William and Madeleine got off at Fontenay station. It was a Monday, and the train was almost empty. Five or six fellow-passengers, inhabitants of the district. Who were re turning. Home, presented themselves at the platform-exit with the two young people, and dispersed each in his own direction, without bestowing a glance on the surroundings, like folks in a hurry to get home. When they were outside the station, the young man offered his arm to the young woman, as though they had not left the streets of Paris. They turned to the left, and went at a leisurely pace up the magnificent avenue of trees which extends from Sceaux to Fontenay. As they ascended, they watched the train at the bottom of the slope start again on its journey with laboured and deep-drawn puffs.
