Geschichtsvorstellungen, die für die Herausbildung politischer Gemeinschaften bedeutsam sind, könnte man als „intentionale Geschichte“ bezeichnen. In dem Buch wird zunächst dieses Konzept vorgestellt. Im Anschluss daran werden Träger, Medien und Formen dieser Art von Geschichte in der griechischen Kultur systematisch dargelegt. Dabei wird vor allem herausgearbeitet, dass bei den alten Griechen zunächst die Dichter die Herren der Vergangenheit waren (und es auch weithin blieben). Aus dieser Dominanz des Ästhetischen in dem Blick auf die Vergangenheit ergaben sich weit reichende Konsequenzen, insbesondere eine unauflösliche Verquickung von Mythos und Geschichte. Dies eröffnet die Möglichkeit, in einem zweiten Teil deutlicher zu bestimmen, worin der spezifische Ansatz und der besondere Charakter der griechischen Geschichtsschreibung liegen: Ein philosophisch geprägter Wahrheitsanspruch begründete neue Herausforderungen an die Darstellung von Geschichte. Die Spannung von „Dichtung und Wahrheit“ blieb dem Genre der Historiographie allerdings erhalten. Ein wesentliches und auch für die Nachwirkung bedeutsames Element antiker Kultur wird damit neu beleuchtet.

This volume focuses on the representation of the recent past in classical Athenian oratory and investigates the ability of the orators to interpret it according to their interests; the inability of the Athenians to make an objective assessment of it; and the unwillingness of the citizens to hear the truth, make self-criticism and take responsibility for bad results. Twenty-eight scholars have written chapters to this end, dealing with a wide range of themes, in terms both of contents and of chronology, from the fifth to the fourth century B.C. Each contributor has written a chapter that analyzes one or more historical events mentioned or alluded in the corpus of the Attic orators and covers the three species of Attic oratory. Chapters that treat other issues collectively are also included. The common feature of each contribution is an outline of the recent events that took place and influenced the citizens and/or the city of Athens and its juxtaposition with their rhetorical treatment by the orators either by comparing the rhetorical texts with the historical sources and/or by examining the rhetorical means through which the speakers model the recent past. The distinction between ancient and modern modes of historical thought is characterized by the growing complexity of the discipline of history in modernity. Consequently, the epistemological and methodological standard of ancient historiography is typically held as inferior against the modern ideal. This book serves to address this apparent deficit. Its scope is three-fold. Firstly, it aims at encountering ancient modes of historical and historiographical thought within the province of their own horizon. Secondly, this book considers the possibility of a dialogue between ancient and modern philosophies of history concerning the influence of ancient historical thought on the development of modern philosophy of history and the utility of modern philosophy of history in the interpretation of ancient historiography. Thirdly, this book explores the continuities and discontinuities in historical method and thought from antiquity to modernity. Ultimately, this volume demonstrates the necessity of re-evaluating our assumptions about the relation of ancient and modern historical thought and lays the groundwork for a more fruitful dialogue in the future.
