Surveys the history of Jews in Olfen from the 16th century to World War II. Mentions tensions between Christians and Jews during the Prussian period in 1816-47, e.g. in 1847 leaders of the Jewish community sent a complaint to the mayor concerning the obstruction of an alley leading to the synagogue. Pp. 209-236 discuss the Holocaust, during which the members of nine Jewish families from Olfen were murdered. Pp. 228-237 focus on the fate of members of the Simons family, who lived in Münster from 1930. They had to move to a "Jewish house" after the "Kristallnacht" pogrom and were dispossessed of their property. They were deported in 1943 to Theresienstadt and in 1944 to Auschwitz, where most of them perished; Ernst Simons died in 1945 in Dachau after a death march.

Traces the history of Jews in Westphalia during the 11th-15th centuries. Discusses various aspects of Jewish life and of the policies of the rulers in regard to the Jews. Relates extensively to acts of antisemitism - blood libels, host desecration accusations, riots, and expulsions. Reports on pogroms which followed the Black Death epidemic, in 1350, during which ca. 900 Jews were murdered. Although in 1372 a community was established again in Dortmund, and in 1500 in Lippe, Westphalian Jewry did not reach its former number up to the end of the medieval period. This fact was also related to the destruction of the nearby community of Köln in 1424. States that with the ruin of the Rhenisch basis, Westphalia's Jewry withered and lost its impact. Pp. 181-317 contain sources, notes, and appendixes.
