Im Verlauf der Arbeit wuchs mir der Gegenstand so weit uber das ursprünglich ge steckte Ziel hinaus, daß ich den an3pruchsvolleren Titel einer Geschichte der neueren Erkenntnistheorie von Descartes bis Hegel glaubte wagen zu dürfen. Indessen haften dem Buch von der ursprunglichen Beschränkung des Themas her noch eine Reihe von Mängeln an: Vor Allem wird man in der Darstellung der nach-kantischen Philosophie Fries und Herbart vermissen. Der Fehler, von dem ich zugebe, daß er dem Titel des Buches gegenüber, wenn man die Begrenzung "von Descartes bis Hegel rein zeitlich nimmt, ein Fehler ist, ist absichtlich begangen worden: die Dar stellung beider Philosophen ist in einem andern Zusammenhang geplant, in dessen Mittelpunkt die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Erkenntnis theorie und Psychologie im 19. Excerpt from Lehrbuch der Geschichte der Philosophie Vielfache Erfahrung des Lehrens und Prufens hat mich davon uberzeugt, dass die Ausfuhrung des mir von der verehrten Verlagsbuchhandlung nahe gelegten Gedankens, die Geschichte der Philosophie in der Form eines Lehrbuchs zu behandeln, geeignet sein konnte, dem wesentlichen Zweck, den diese Wissenschaft im Zusammenhange unserer Universitotsbildung erfullen soll, in nutzbringender Weise zu dienen. Denn es ist nicht zu verkennen, dass wir, trotz aller philosophischen Verarbeitung des historischen Materials, in dessen Auffassung noch haufig jener schematischen Aneinanderreihung begegnen, die da auswendig lernt: der hat das gesagt und der das und der das u. s. w. Und die grosse Betriebsamkeit, mit der sich in der Gegenwart das philosophiegeschichtliche Studium in die gelehrte Behandlung spezieller und speziellster Fragen zu verzetteln droht, ist - das darf man bei aller Achtung vor dem darauf gerichteten wissenschaftlichen Kraftaufwand sagen - wenig geeignet, hierin Abhilfe zu schaden. Wir sind wieder in der Gefahr, in der Geschichte der Philosophie uber das Historische das philosophische zu vergessen. Das Lehrbuch, welches ich deshalb hier dem Publikum und in erster Linie der akademischen Jugend biete, will ausdrucklich eine Geschichte nicht der Philosophen, sondern der Philosophie sein. Wie ich diese Geschichte auffasse, ist in der Einleitung gesagt und in dem Ganzen ausgefuhrt. Aber diese Aufgabe hat auch die Form des Buches bestimmt. Ich habe nicht nur das biographische, literargeschichtliche und bibliographische Material auf den denkbar knappsten Raum beschrankt, sondern ich habe mich auch von dem ublichen Schema, wonach die Geschichte der Lehren an die Reihenfolge der philosophierenden Personlichkeiten geknupft zu werden pflegt, frei zu machen gesucht, um in der Hauptsache nur eine Geschichte der Probleme und der zu ihrer Losung erzeugten Begriffe zu geben.
