Excerpt from Geschichte der Russischen Litteratur Eine historische ist schon wegen der Eigenart dieser Litteratur unerlalslich. Diese Eigenart wurzelt in dem russischen Boden, in dem Temperament seiner Leute, in den aulseren, fremden Einflussen, die das nationale Empfinden vollig um gestaltet haben. Die Kenntnis der Bedingungen, unter denen das moderne Russentum erwachsen ist, ist fur die richtige EinSchatzung seiner Litteratur, des vollsten, ungezwungensten Aus druckes seiner selbst, unentbehrliche Grundlage. Die Wirkung dieser Bedingungen reicht bis in die fernste Vergangenheit zuruck, erstreckt sich uber Jahrhunderte, aus denen von keinerlei Litteratur, nicht einmal von Surrogaten einer solchen, zu berichten ware, und die der Litteraturhistoriker doch nicht uberspringen darf, will er sich nicht im XIX. Jahrhundert Ratseln gegenuber machtlos finden. Da nun beim europaischen Leser eine Kenntnis russischer Entwicklung es handelt sich hierbei um keinerlei Namen oder Daten - nicht ohne weiteres vorauszusetzen ist, mussen die springenden Momente dieser Entwicklung zuerst hervorgehoben werden. Am heutigen Rassen ist namlich vieles fremd, angefangen von seiner Schrift, die fur eine fremde Sprache von Haus aus bestimmt war, nicht fur die russische bis zu seinem Namen in seiner doppelten Form, der volkstumlichen Rua wie der offiziellen und veralteten Rossija, Rols. Einst war alles vollig anders. In der Urheimat der Slawen, zwischen Oder und Don, von den Karpathen bis zum Waldai und der Ostsee, salsen im Osten dieses Gebietes, vom Bug und san ab, zahlreiche kleinere Stamme eines Dialektes. Spatere Differenzierungen ergaben erst eine Art von Dreiteilung, einen ssudlichen, kleinrussischen, ruthenischen, ukrainischen Dialelct, eiiien nordwestlichem weilsrussischen und den nord oder grolsrussischen; der grolsrussische, raumlich der am weitesten nach Osten und Norden vorgeschobene und einst zugleich der raumlich beschrankteste, hat von Grolsnowgorod und spater von Moskau aus seine aulserordentliche Verbreitung und schlielsliche zentrale Stellung gewonnen, sich am weitesten nach Norden und Osten ausgedehnt; der Moskauer Dialelct ist dann auch zur Schriftsprache geworden, zum Russischen kurzweg. Von dem Charakter dieser ganzen Sammlung und namentlich von a._brückners glänzender Geschichte der russischen Litteratur unterscheidet sich dieser Halbband stark, denn hier wird, wenn auch in noch so knapper Fassung, auf die ältere Litteraturperiode besonderes Gewicht gelegt, weil diese eine welt historische Bedeutung hat, mag sie auch ihrem Inhalt nach nicht besonders interessant erscheinen. Ich glaube, dafs namentlich Byzantinisten und überhaupt Theologen, Philologen und Historiker aller Arten der Verlagsbuchhandlung Dank wissen werden, dafs sie auf meine Intentionen, ihnen einen kleinen Führer zum Ver ständnis des älteren südslawischen Kulturlebens zu liefern, bereit willig einging. Ebenso dürfte derselbe als eine Art Einleitung zur Geschichte der russischen und rumänischen Litteratur in dieser Sammlung Willkommen sein. Dafs ich dabei immer auch die Interessen weiterer slawistischer Kreise im Auge hatte, be darf wohl keiner Begründung. Natürlich war es unter solchen Umständen nicht möglich, allen Bedürfnissen und Wünschen innerhalb eines so engen Rahmens ganz gerecht zu werden. Leider mufste ich sogar von den wichtigsten Litteraturangaben, die ich im Anhang bringen wollte, Abstand nehmen; sie hätten namentlich deshalb Bedeutung, weil selbst solchen Forschern, die schon bestrebt smd, mit russischen Publikationen vertraut zu werden, die südslawischen mehr oder weniger unbekannt bleiben. The Moravian princes, seeing that the people were unable to apprehend even the elementary truths of Christianity, addressed them selves to the Byzantine Emperor Michael; who selected Cyril for the purpose. The success of the Slavonic mission in Moravia, aroused and alarmed the German Hierarchy which, dreading the loss of its influence on the Moravians impugned these first missioners before Pope Nicholas I. The Pope summoned the brothers to Rome for trial, but it was his successor Adrian II who heard them, and so far from letting them be tried, made Methodius a Bishop and sent him to Moravia where he lived for sixteen years more.
