Diese Hausarbeit ist eine Beschreibung über den Wandel der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche von der Sowjetära zur Ära nach dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion nach 1991. Es geht um den Wandel der Rolle der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche vor allem in der Perstroikaphase unter Gorbatschow, sowie das Verhältnis von Religion und religiösem Extremismus im postsowjetischen Russland unter Boris Jelzin. Insgesamt sind seit der Christianisierung der Rus unter Fürst Vladimir I. ca. 1000 Jahre vergangen, daher kann sich diese Arbeit nur auf einen kleinen Teil der Kirchengeschichte beschränken und wird lediglich den Zeitraum der letzten 100 Jahre umfassen. Es wird dabei um den Zeitraum nach der Oktoberrevolution bis in die Gegenwart zur Ära Putin gehen. Das erste Kapitel dieser Hausarbeit bezieht sich auf die erste Phase der Sowjetunion-, bis zum Tod Lenins. Das folgende Kapitel befasst sich mit der Ära des Stalinismus. Dabei wird auch auf die besondere Rolle der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche in der Sowjetunion während des Zweiten Weltkrieges eingegangen. Danach legt diese Hausarbeit die Rolle der Kirche in der Tauwetterperiode dar. Nach der Tauwetterperiode folgt die Breshnew-Doktrin und es wird wieder das Verhältnis von Kirche und Staat analysiert. Das nächste Kapitel richtet sich auf die Phase der sowjetischen Geschichte, und die Rolle der Kirche beinhaltet die Phase von Glasnost und Perestroika, dem Reformprogramm Gorbatschows. Diese Phase ist entscheidend in der Geschichte der Sowjetunion und hat die heutige russische Stellung der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche entscheidend geprägt.

The role of migration for Christianity as a world religion during the last two centuries has drawn considerable attention from scholars in different fields. The main issue this book seeks to address is the question whether and to what extent migration and diaspora formation should be considered as elements of a new historiography of global Christianity, including the reflection upon earlier epochs. By focusing on migration and diaspora, the emerging map of Christianity will include the dimension of movement and interaction between actors in different regions, providing a more comprehensive ‘map of agency’ of individuals and groups previously regarded as passive. Furthermore, local histories will become parts of a broader picture and historiography might correlate both local and transregional perspectives in a balanced manner. Behind this approach lies the desire to broaden the perspective of Ecclesiastical History – and religious history in general – in a more systematic manner by questioning the traditional criteria of selection. This might help us to recover previously lost actors and forgotten dynamics.

The Orthodox migration in the West matters, despite its unobtrusive presence. And it matters in a way that has not yet been explored in social and religious studies: in terms of size, geographical scope, theological input and social impact. This book explores the adjustment of Orthodox migrants and their churches to Western social and religious contexts in different scenarios. This variety is consistent with Orthodox internal diversity regarding ethnicity, migration circumstances, Church-State relations and in line with the specificities of the receiving country in terms of religious landscape, degree of secularisation, legal treatment of immigrant religious institutions or socio-economic configurations.
