The question of the extent to which the Septuagint reflects an evolution in messianic belief in comparison with the Masoretic Text has come into prominence in recent years, and in view of the role played by messianism in Jewish belief of the late Second Temple period and in early Christianity it seemed very appropriate that "The Septuagint and Messianism" should be chosen as the theme of the 2004 Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense. This volume contains the papers given at the Colloquium, which are concerned both with methodological issues and with the interpretation of specific texts (in practice the majority of the texts in the Septuagint for which a messianic interpretation has been claimed). The papers are very far from all reflecting the same approach, and it has frequently happened that the same texts have been treated by different contributors from very different viewpoints. But the fact such different viewpoints are expressed is a proper reflection of the complexity of the issues involved in the question of the extent of messianic belief in the Septuagint, and of the fact that the question requires a nuanced answer. It is in any case hoped that the varied approaches reflected in the papers will serve to make clear the underlying reasons for the differences between those who take a "minimalist" and those who take a "maximalist" view on the subject of the Septuagint and Messianism.

"The function of this Index to Aquila's version of the Bible is to assist in the major task of obtaining a pre-Massoretic Hebrew text to the Old Testament. To achieve this, we must first be certain that we have a reasonably accurate Septuagint text, and this in turn involves us in the task of piercing the veil which divides the period of extant uncial manuscripts of the Greek Old Testament from the Septuagint period itself. The way back is through the fifth column of the Hexapla. Origen was not the first editor to make the Greek Bible conform more closely with its Hebrew original and the process may have begun even before Aquila, Symmachus, and Theodotion. It was the famous Wellhausen hypothesis, elaborated and defended in his classic 'Prolegomena to the History of Ancient Israel', which more than any other single work of the mind revolutionized the critical understanding of the Hebrew Bible. Prior to the appearance of Wellhausen, the theory proposed by Graf had been all but neglected. In it Graf had argued that the Levitical Law and related sections of the Pentateuch were not written until the fall of the kingdom of Judah, and that the Pentateuch in its present form was not accepted as authoritative until the reformation of Ezra. With Wellhausen's brilliant analysis of the literature and penetrating consideration of the sources, the Graf theory was accepted. Although today Wellhausen has been modified and revised, the development of contemporary Biblical criticism owes its present vitality and scope to the pioneering investigations of Wellhausen.
