[The Weimar Disputation in 1560. The Search for Theological Consensus and the Confessional Politics of John Frederick II] In August of 1560, the theology professors Matthias Flacius Illyricus and Victorin Strigel discussed the freedom of the will at the Weimar palace. This debate ranks among the vehement inner-protestant controversies in the wake of the Augsburg Interim of 1548 revolving around the preservation and interpretation of Luther's theological legacy. This book not only examines the controversy itself, but also the confessional politics of the Ernestine Duke John Frederick II. By organizing and heading the religious colloquy in Weimar, he attempted to settle the theological conflict. In addition, the course, the dialogue structures and the rules of the disputation in Weimar are analysed.

Women Reformers Of Early Modern Europe written by Kirsi I. Stjerna and has been published by Fortress Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-04 with Religion categories.

Women Reformers of Early Modern Europe provides an expansive view of women negotiating their faith, voice, and agency in the religious and cultural scene of the sixteenth-century reformations. Women from different geographic contexts (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Holland, and Scandinavia) and from a broad spectrum of vocations and social standings are highlighted along with examples of their original writings in English translation (in some cases brand new). An international, interdisciplinary cohort of over thirty scholars provide cutting-edge scholarship on women, religion, and gender in the sixteenth-century reformation context. Chapters interpret historical sources relevant to the women in question and provide original material for a deeper understanding of each woman's specific negotiations about her faith and religious preferences, as well as about her specific options--as a woman. Most of the women in the book left a written record, providing a valuable window into women's spirituality and theology. Gender questions are engaged throughout the chapters that provide irrefutable evidence of women's essential roles in the reception and implementation of the Protestant confessions. An important voice comes from women who defended their right to profess Catholic faith. Thematic articles enhance the analysis of the roles, experiences, and contributions of individual women in different contexts and positions vis-à-vis reformation teachings. Women stand out as writers, theologians, historians, biblical interpreters, publishers, hymnwriters, rulers, pastoral care givers, defenders of justice, "heretics," rebels, midwives, mothers, and friends. The tone of the volume is scholarly but invites a broad spectrum of readers who have varying levels of background knowledge. It is especially suitable as a textbook or as a reference guide in different disciplines (reformation studies, church history, theological history, gender scholarship, early modern and sixteenth-century studies; and language studies).

In this important new volume, Arand, Kolb, and Nestingen bring the fruit of an entire generation of scholarship to bear on these documents, making it an essential and up-to-date class text. The Lutheran Confessions places the documents solidly within their political, social, ecclesiastical and theological contexts, relating them to the world in which they took place. Though the book is not a theology of the Confessions, readers will clearly understand the issues at stake in the narratives, both in their own time, and in ours.

[History of the Protestant Church in Baden, Volume 2: The Church of the Margraviate] This volume covers the period from about 1530-1813 in the history of the regional church in Baden. The history and theology, church government and piety of Protestantism in the margraviate of Baden(-Durlach) are described. Thus, the volume ranges from the prehistory and history of the Reformation in Baden to the prehistory of the Baden Union. The focus of the presentation is the development of the Lutheran Church of Old Baden between Orthodoxy and Enlightenment in the age of Margrave Karl Friedrich. The integration of the Electoral Palatinate on the right bank of the Rhine since 1803 is dealt with, as well as the history of Reformed refugees and the Jews. A total of four volumes are planned; the third volume will offer the history of the Protestant Church in the Grand Duchy of Baden between 1815 and 1918.
