Het boeddhisme ontstond in het oostelijke deel van het oude India, in en rond het oude koninkrijk Magadha (nu in Bihar, India), en is gebaseerd op de leer van Siddhārtha Gautama. De religie evolueerde terwijl deze zich vanuit de noordoostelijke regio van het Indiase subcontinent door Centraal-, Oost- en Zuidoost-Azië verspreidde. Op een of ander moment heeft het het grootste deel van het Aziatische continent beïnvloed. De geschiedenis van het boeddhisme wordt ook gekenmerkt door de ontwikkeling van talrijke bewegingen, schisma's en scholen, waaronder de Theravāda, en tradities, met contrasterende perioden van expansie en terugtrekking. Volgens de vroege bronnen werd Siddhārtha Gautama geboren in de kleine Shakya (Pali: Sakka) Republiek, die deel uitmaakte van het Kosala-rijk van het oude India, nu in het hedendaagse Nepal. Hij is dus ook bekend als de Shakyamuni (letterlijk: "De wijze van de Shakya-clan).De vroege boeddhistische teksten bevatten geen ononderbroken leven van de Boeddha, pas later na 200 vGT werden verschillende "biografieën" met veel mythologische verfraaiing geschreven. Alle teksten zijn het er echter over eens dat Gautama afstand deed van het leven van de huisbewoner en enige tijd als sramana-asceet leefde en onder verschillende leraren studeerde, voordat hij door meditatie nirvana (blussen) en bodhi (ontwaken) bereikte.
