Ist die Zweigeschlechtlichkeit in unserer westlichen Gesellschaft nur eine Illusion? Oder gibt es wirklich zwei und nur zwei Geschlechter und von wem wurde dies überhaupt festgeschrieben? Alle Individuen westlicher Kulturen werden von Geburt an aufgrund ihrer primären Geschlechtsmerkmale in zwei Geschlechter unterschieden und gehören resultierend ihr Leben lang entweder der Kategorie der Frau oder der Kategorie des Mannes an. Diese selbstverständliche binäre Differenzierung der Geschlecher wird aber in dieser Arbeit in Frage gestellt. Stattdessen wird anhand zweier Phänomene, die die Grundüberzeugung der europäischen Gesellschaft herausfordern, nämlich der Inter- und Transsexualität, aufgezeigt, dass die Geschlechtszugehörigkeit, die dichotome Differenzierung dessen sowie das Geschlecht als solches von den Gesellschaftsmitgliedern selbst konstruiert werden. Ein Geschlecht hat man, indem man es entsprechend praktiziert.

Gender- and sex-related norms have an impact on us from the first to the last day of our lives. What are the effects of such norms on the education of children and adolescents? Conveyed via parents/family, school, and peers, they seem to be an inseparable part of human relations. After its favorable reception in German-speaking countries from 2014 onwards, this title is now available in English. The texts show that the traditional assumption of a dualistic, bipolar normativity of sex and gender leads to children being taught gender-typical behavior. The contributions in this volume explore the reasons for these practices and open the debate on the divergence between the prevailing norms and the plurality of different life plans. In addition, the book helps to disengage the topic of sex and gender from a hitherto narrowly circumscribed context of sexual orientation. The contributions point the way towards a culture of respect and mutual acceptance and show new methodological as well as theoretical approaches, e.g. by introducing the figure of the continuum, so that, in future research projects, more than just the two sexes and genders of female and male might be considered as a new normality.

Die Monografie widmet sich der Diskussion um Geschlecht und Sexualität in Russland nach dem Sieg von Conchita Wurst und untersucht das Verhältnis von Diskurs und Identität. Im Vordergrund steht die Funktion von Sprache sowohl für die Identitätskonstruktion als auch für die Schaffung und Abgrenzung von Räumen. This case also made clear just how far gender and sexuality are instrumentalised and politicised – not least in creating Russians’ self-perception and constructing a Russian national identity – and how massively notions of identity impact on Russian everyday life. The monograph focuses on the discussion of gender and sexuality in Russia following the 2014 event and investigates the relation between discourse and identity. Above all, it is concerned with the function of language in identity construction, and in the creation and demarcation of spaces. In this context, Dr. Scheller-Boltz’s study not only analyses lexicological and word-formation peculiarities, but also provides some revealing research findings about specific language use, including certain argumentation strategies.
