Patrick Brennan, a long-time student of the Civil War, published author, and an editorial advisor for The Civil War Monitor magazine, has teamed up with his technology-astute daughter Dylan Brennan to bring the largest Civil War battle to life in the remarkable 2-volume study: Gettysburg in Color. Volume 1 covers Brandy Station to the Peach Orchard, and Volume 2 covers The Wheatfield to Falling Waters. Rather than guess or dabble with the colors, the Brennans used an artificial intelligence-based computerized color identifier to determine the precise color of uniforms, flesh, hair, equipment, terrain, houses, and much more. The result is a monumental full-color study of the important three-day battle that brings the men, the landscape, and the action into the 21st Century. The deep colorization of battle-related woodcuts, for example, reveals a plethora of details that have passed generations of eyes unseen. The photos of the soldiers and their officers look as if they were taken yesterday. The use of this modern technology shines a light on one Gettysburg photographic mystery in particular. Colorizing some of the battle’s “death” images revealed the presence of Union and Confederate dead that may help determine the previously unknown location of the photographs. That may also be a “first” when it comes to Civil War photography, as Pat Brennan explains: “It was long believed this was an image of seven dead Union soldiers. In fact, only five are Union men. The other two are Confederates. I am still researching the issue, but I believe this may be the only photo we have from the entire Civil War that portrays dead from both sides.” In the early 1960s, the unique presentation in Bruce Catton’s The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War spurred the interest of a generation of readers. You've probably seen some of the old photographs of the Civil War, including some taken after the battle of Gettysburg. Of course they're all in black & white, making the subjects look rather dull - ancient, long ago and far away. But in this book we've converted those photos to color, and for the first time you'll see what the subjects really looked liked - the battlefield, the town, and the people. Colorizing these photos gives them a much more contemporary look, making you realize that the Civil War wasn't all that long ago, and color brings out the small details usually that often go unnoticed in older black & white photos. The intent of the colorizing process was not to make the photos look "pretty," but to make them look realistic - how the scene actually looked at the time in full color.Although no photos where taken during the actual battle, many were taken within two or three days of the event, and the best of them are included in this book, along with many additional photos previously only seen in black & white, and the book includes excellent commentary explaining the circumstances surrounding each photo.

The Sesquicentennial edition of African Americans and the Gettysburg Campaign, expands the range of research beyond its original 2006 edition. With a foreword from chief historian emeritus of the National Park Service, Edwin C. Bearss, Paradis sets the stage by introducing readers to the important and colorful members of the black community in and around the town of Gettysburg, including descriptions of Underground Railroad activity in the area. With the outbreak of the Civil War, black volunteers for the Union army were initially rejected. But that did not stop them from assuming non-combatant roles, such as their role as teamsters. Paradis also includes overviews of the African American contribution to the Confederate army and finally the authorization of black troops in the North, with their early action in combat before and during the Gettysburg Campaign. Paradis searingly describes, among other matters, the Invasion of Pennsylvania by the Confederate Army in July, 1863, which would turn into a massive slave hunt with the abduction of free Pennsylvania blacks, precipitating a boom in black resident volunteers in defense of the state.
