A journey through the strange visions and visitations of characters: historical, contemporary and futuristic. The brief tales are written for easy reading and reach from ancient times to the imagined worlds of the future. Rather than horror stories, these experiences are unfolded as the strange and intriguing encounters of people who are visited by an unexpected presence, or who travel through unfamiliar landscapes both physical and mental. Many tales are set within historical worlds that may be remote but have some familiar features and some significance for our own times. The imagination of those engaged in these experiences are often stretched as they discover truths about themselves and their surroundings. Young people come of age as they witness unfamiliar occurrences and world-weary personalities find fresh meanings in the scenarios that they move through. Many of the stories explore the relevance of ancient myths to the truths that the characters find on their voyages of self-discovery.

Peripheral visions is a unique reference collection that includes all of Robert Hood's 44 ghost stories to date, three of them especially written for this 2 volume series. These memorable tales display Hood's uncanny ability to make the fantastic real, to embrace weirdness and create human characters whose lives - both inner and outer - haunted by mortality, are laid bare and revealed to be our own worst nightmares. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humour and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood's stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach. As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There's always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery.

I cannot say that I have like every ghost that I have met because in real experience there can be some very unpleasant ghosts. There many stories about faceless voices that speak for lonely people. Voices that come from nowhere that threaten, cajole, terrify or madden the people who hear them. Inferno had been described in gruesome and grisly and garish details by philosophers, writers and painters. However they are not the only ones who have a vision of the underworld. Inferno is an open book to all who choose to turn its pages. A coloring book that you may fill in yourself. And so many people have designed their own private hell filled with their very own private devils and demons. Many people have discovered that you don't have to die in order to live there although it helps. "Only the unknown frightens men. But once a man has faced the unknown that terror becomes the known. "Antoine de Saint-Exupery . “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” - HP Lovecraft . WARNING: Do not read this book alone. And make sure that you are reading in a well-lighted area. The entities that are associated with this book might interact with you.

Ghostly Apparitions written by Stefan Andriopoulos and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-09 with History categories.

A media archaeology that traces connections between new media technologies and distinct cultural realms, considering topics that range from Kant's philosophy to somnambulist clairvoyants. Drawing together literature, media, and philosophy, Ghostly Apparitions provides a new model for media archaeology. Stefan Andriopoulos examines the relationships between new media technologies and distinct cultural realms, tracing connections between Kant's philosophy and the magic lantern's phantasmagoria, the Gothic novel and print culture, and spiritualist research and the invention of television. As Kant was writing about the possibility of spiritual apparitions, the emerging medium of the phantasmagoria used hidden magic lanterns to terrify audiences with ghostly projections. Andriopoulos juxtaposes the philosophical arguments of German idealism with contemporaneous occultism and ghost shows. In close readings of Kant, Hegel, and Schopenhauer, he traces the diverging ways in which these authors appropriate optical media effects and spiritualist notions. The spectral apparitions from this period also intersect with an exploding print market and the rise of immersive reading practices. Andriopoulos explores the circulation of ostensibly genuine ghost narratives and Gothic fiction, which was said to produce “reading addiction” and a loss of reality. Romantic representations of animal magnetism and clairvoyance similarly blurred the boundary between fiction and reality. In the 1840s, Edgar Allan Poe adapted a German case history that described a magnetic clairvoyant as arrested in the moment of dying. Yet even though Poe's tale belonged to the realm of literary fiction, it was reprinted as an authentic news item. Andriopoulos extends this archaeology of new media into the early twentieth century. Tracing a reciprocal interaction between occultism and engineering, he reveals how spiritualist research into the psychic “television” of somnambulist clairvoyants enabled the concurrent emergence of the technical medium.
