The colossal unseen gears of a vast knowledge and truth are at work here with the eminent force of galactic juggernauts tearing rifts in space and time, welding realities as they see fit. They must be, for Oliver to impossibly be face to face with the ghost of the man he killed one year ago. But he is not the only one having a treacherous night, Mickey trespasses in Grover Forest where he monstrously underestimates the creatures that claimed those grounds long before mankind. Then there is Osiris, who, en route to see his sickly brother is met with misfortune on a trusted dark and desolate shortcut. All three yield in submission to the cold indifference of the universe as their lives are threatened and with each passing minute, their value is stripped of its importance to this world. They are lost...and alone. Helpless as all the eyes of autumn watch down on them with icy rainfall and razor-sharp winds. Haunted by the ghosts October brings. Can they find significance in their life, if only for a moment? Or will they be just another ghost story? Leave these pages behind feeling haunted. Not by the poltergeist, the monsters in the woods, or the cosmic horror that connects them. Instead, be haunted that all ghost stories are human stories, living unnecessarily unfortunate lives only to see a violent end. In a future where human existence gets better, the way we live today will become horror stories for the generations to come.

Ghosts and other supernatural phenomena are widely represented throughout modern culture. They can be found in any number of entertainment, commercial, and other contexts, but popular media or commodified representations of ghosts can be quite different from the beliefs people hold about them, based on tradition or direct experience. Personal belief and cultural tradition on the one hand, and popular and commercial representation on the other, nevertheless continually feed each other. They frequently share space in how people think about the supernatural. In Haunting Experiences, three well-known folklorists seek to broaden the discussion of ghost lore by examining it from a variety of angles in various modern contexts. Diane E. Goldstein, Sylvia Ann Grider, and Jeannie Banks Thomas take ghosts seriously, as they draw on contemporary scholarship that emphasizes both the basis of belief in experience (rather than mere fantasy) and the usefulness of ghost stories. They look closely at the narrative role of such lore in matters such as socialization and gender. And they unravel the complex mix of mass media, commodification, and popular culture that today puts old spirits into new contexts
