Per Davide Lajolo il titolo più appropriato per questo libro sarebbe stato Germaine. Perché quando ci si incontra a Parigi, un 14 luglio all’inizio degli anni Trenta del Novecento, durante un ballo pubblico nelle strade, l’amore può sembrare una predestinazione, una promessa illimitata. Sono le undici di sera e Giorgio attraversa da solo una piazza. Lo sguardo gli cade su una ragazza seduta vicino alla madre. Si avvicina di slancio e con un inchino cerimonioso chiede il permesso di ballare con lei. Stanno suonando un valzer veloce. Giorgio e Germaine, si chiama così la ragazza, muovono i primi passi insieme. Lei ha mani «fini e asciutte, che rivelano una gran forza interiore». Con una mancia, Giorgio ottiene dall’orchestra altri due tanghi e «in quella calda serata di festa popolare» nasce un legame che durerà tutta la vita.Sembra la scena di un film che René Clair deve ancora girare. È invece l’incipit appassionato di un tempo in cui tutto si mischiava: la lotta antifascista, il coraggio e i rischi, gli ideali di giustizia e libertà e le lettere di Gramsci, le primavere di Parigi e le estati romane, le isole del confino e quelle della clandestinità, gli innamoramenti, il carcere, gli amici, la nascita lontana dei figli e l’incombere minaccioso della guerra. Un’irripetibile educazione sentimentale e politica che ci ricorda di più certe pagine di Hemingway in Festa mobile che le autobiografie di carattere storico di altri testimoni del Novecento.Un’isola è anche l’ultimo libro che Giorgio scriverà. Muore pochi mesi dopo averlo terminato, a distanza di cinquant’anni da quella stagione, e Germaine non gli sopravvive che per poche ore.

Between the two world wars, thousands of European antifascists were pushed to act by the political circumstances of the time. In that context, the Spanish Civil War and the armed resistances during the Second World War involved particularly large numbers of transnational fighters. The need to fight fascism wherever it presented itself was undoubtedly the main motivation behind these fighters’ decision to mobilise. Despite all this, however, not enough attention has been paid to the fact that some of these volunteers felt they were the last exponents of a tradition of armed volunteering which, in their case, originated in the nineteenth century. The capacity of war volunteering to endure and persist over time has rarely been investigated in historiography. The aim of this book is to reconstruct the radical and transnational tradition of war volunteering connected to Giuseppe Garibaldi’s legacy in Southern Europe between the unification of Italy (1861) and the end of the Second World War (1945). This book seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of the long-term, interconnected, and radical dimensions of the so called Garibaldinism.
