Quando Giorgio Pasquali, certamente uno dei massimi autori della cultura italiana del Novecento, pubblica Le Lettere di Platone, ha appena compiuto 43 anni ed è quindi nella sua piena maturità. Il libro va letto insieme a Storia della tradizione e critica del testo, pubblicato quattro anni prima, e a Preistoria della poesia romana (1936) ed è, come questi, un libro unitario e non una raccolta di articoli. Ed è in questo libro, più che negli altri due, che è dato misurare la ricchezza e la varietà degli interessi di un filologo, che, nei quattro volumi delle Pagine stravaganti, ci ha lasciato alcuni fra gli esempi supremi della prosa letteraria del Novecento. A differenza che nei primi due, nel libro su Platone il referente primo non è, infatti, la filologia, ma il pensiero nella sua inaggirabile relazione alla storia e alla politica. Così, nella sezione certamente più importante, quella dedicata alla Settima lettera, Pasquali scrive – sono le sue parole – «un capitolo nuovo di storia siciliana» e, insieme, per dipanare i fili di cui è intessuta la lettera, un breve ma prezioso trattato sulla politica greca nel iv secolo a.C. E forse nulla testimonia dell’orgoglio e, insieme, dell’umiltà così caratteristici della sua mente, come le parole che concludono la prefazione: «Allontanarmi da Platone m’è grave, perché so di non aver mai avuto contatto con uno spirito più alto». g.a. Io le lessi e rilessi, appassionandomi per l’uomo Platone e per la speculazione ultima del filosofo Platone; e nel 1931-32 osai fare di esse argomento delle esercitazioni di seminario, che tenni con i miei scolari di Firenze e di Pisa. E frutto delle esercitazioni è il presente libro. «Il nome di Giorgio Pasquali è nome insigne nell’ambito della cultura italiana ed europea. An updated history of classical philology had long been a desideratum of scholars of the ancient world. The volume edited by Diego Lanza and Gherardo Ugolini is structured in three parts. In the first one (“Towards a science of antiquity”) the approach of Anglo-Saxon philology (R. Bentley) and the institutionalization of the discipline in the German academic world (C.G. Heyne and F.A. Wolf) are described. In the second part (“The illusion of the archetype. Classical Studies in the Germany of the 19th Century”) the theoretical contributions and main methodological disputes that followed are analysed (K. Lachmann, J.G. Hermann, A. Boeckh, F. Nietzsche and U. von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff). The last part (“The classical philology of the 20th century”) treats the redefinition of classical studies after the Great War in Germany (W. Jaeger) and in Italy (G. Pasquali). In this context, the contributions of papyrology and of the new images of antiquity that have emerged in the works of writers, narrators, and translators of our time have been considered. This part finishes with the presentation of some of the most influential scholars of the last decades (B. Snell, E.R. Dodds, J.-P. Vernant, B. Gentili, N. Loraux).
