Painting as Business in Early Seventeenth-Century Rome offers a new perspective on the world of painting in Rome at the beginning of the Baroque, from both an artistic and a socioeconomic point of view. Biased by the accounts of seventeenth-century biographers, who were often academic painters concerned about elevating the status of their profession, art historians have long believed that in Italy, and in Rome in particular, paintings were largely produced by major artists working on commission for the most important patrons of the time. Patrizia Cavazzini&’s extensive archival research reveals a substantially different situation. Cavazzini presents lively and colorful accounts of Roman artists&’ daily lives and apprenticeships and investigates the vast popular art market that served the aesthetic, devotional, and economic needs of artisans and professionals and of the laboring class. Federico Barocci (1535-1612), ein maßgeblicher Wegbereiter des Barock, hinterließ ein umfangreiches graphisches Werk, rund 2000 Blätter, die als Entwürfe zu seinen Gemälden einen aufschlussreichen Einblick in den Schaffensprozess des Künstlers gestatten. Mit insgesamt 47 Studien, die mit ihm in Verbindung gebracht werden, besitzt das Martin-von-Wagner-Museum der Universität Würzburg nach dem Berliner Kupferstichkabinett die größte Sammlung Deutschlands. - Trotzdem existiert bis heute keine das gesamte Konvolut umfassende Untersuchung, so dass es das Anliegen dieser Publikation ist, diese Studien erstmals in Gestalt eines raisonnierenden Bestandskataloges komplett zu erfassen und die noch offenen Zuschreibungsfragen zu erörtern. Neben der Katalogisierung und der kritischen Diskussion des bisherigen Forschungsstandes erfolgt außerdem eine weiterführende Beschäftigung mit der Entwurfstechnik des Künstlers. In einem stilistischen Vergleich zu anderen Zeichnungssammlungen werden Baroccis Entwurfsmethoden, die von ihm in seinen Studien eingesetzten Zeichenmittel (insbesondere farbige Kreiden und Pastelle) sowie die Funktion und der Stil der Studien untersucht. Auch wenn die Sammlung nur einen kleinen Ausschnitt aus dem zeichnerischen Werk Baroccis zeigt, kann dargestellt werden, dass das Konvolut nahezu jeden für Barocci charakteristischen Zeichnungstyp enthält und somit unter dem Anspruch der kompletten Repräsentierung der unterschiedlichen Zeichentechniken des Künstlers von Martin von Wagner zusammengestellt worden war, der damit die unterschiedlichsten Ausdrucksformen der Entwurfspraxis Baroccis in seiner Sammlung präsentieren konnte.
