The Path Of Humility written by Anne H. Muraoka and has been published by Renaissance and Baroque this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Christian art and symbolism categories.

The Path of Humility: Caravaggio and Carlo Borromeo establishes a fundamental relationship between the Franciscan humility of Archbishop of Milan Carlo Borromeo and the Roman sacred works of Caravaggio. This is the first book to consider and focus entirely upon these two seemingly anomalous personalities of the Counter-Reformation. The import of Caravaggio's Lombard artistic heritage has long been seen as pivotal to the development of his sacred style, but it was not his only source of inspiration. This book seeks to enlarge the discourse surrounding Caravaggio's style by placing him firmly in the environment of Borromean Milan, a city whose urban fabric was transformed into a metaphorical Via Crucis. This book departs from the prevailing preoccupation - the artist's experience in Rome as fundamental to his formulation of sacred style - and toward his formative years in Borromeo's Milan, where humility reigned supreme. This book is intended for a broad, yet specialized readership interested in Counter-Reformation art and devotion. It serves as a critical text for undergraduate and graduate art history courses on Baroque art, Caravaggio, and Counter-Reformation art.

Giordano Bruno And Renaissance Science written by Hilary Gatti and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with History categories.

The Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno was a notable supporter of the new science that arose during his lifetime; his role in its development has been debated ever since the early seventeenth century. Hilary Gatti here reevaluates Bruno's contribution to the scientific revolution, in the process challenging the view that now dominates Bruno criticism among English-language scholars. This argument, associated with the work of Frances Yates, holds that early modern science was impregnated with and shaped by Hermetic and occult traditions, and has led scholars to view Bruno primarily as a magus. Gatti reinstates Bruno as a scientific thinker and occasional investigator of considerable significance and power whose work participates in the excitement aroused by the new science and its methods at the end of the sixteenth century. Her original research emphasizes the importance of Bruno's links to the magnetic philosophers, from Ficino to Gilbert; Bruno's reading and extension of Copernicus's work on the motions of the earth; the importance of Bruno's mathematics; and his work on the art of memory seen as a picture logic, which she examines in the light of the crises of visualization in present-day science. She concludes by emphasizing Bruno's ethics of scientific discovery.

Baroque Venice written by Massimo Favilla and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

"This lavish book is the first ever art historical study to survey this specific and crucial period in the history of ‘La Serenissima’ – the Baroque. The 17th century saw Venice’s last big drive to respond on a cultural and artistic level to the Republic’s inexorable decline on the great stage of European politics. The city’s fabric still reflects the desire that was felt at the time for grandiloquent displays of hoped-for triumph. Excess and ostentation prevailed, fuelling a tendency for abundant ornamentation, a taste for the grotesque and the bizarre, and a zeal for enormity and greatness. Here, the authors trace the progression of painting, sculpture and architecture in 17th-century Venice in a series of scholarly essays illuminated by hundreds of glorious illustrations celebrating the city’s seminal examplars of Baroque style, among them Santa Maria della Salute, the mosaics of St Mark’s and the paintings of Giambattista Tiepolo."--Publisher's description.
