Per quanto sia impossibile ricostruire una figura “a tutto tondo” di Giuseppe, la moderna metodologia narratologica profila il personaggio di Giuseppe, quale appare dai vangeli, «come piatto e statico: la sua figura infatti è semplice e si riassume in un solo tratto. Non è certo un protagonista, ma nemmeno si può definire una comparsa, passiva e relegata sullo sfondo: gli si adatta bene la definizione tecnica di “cordicella”, che ricopre un ruolo minore, ma necessario e significativo. Usando lo schema degli “attanti”, il ruolo svolto da Giuseppe è quello di aiutante, in quanto offre un aiuto iniziale e indispensabile al soggetto principale del racconto che è Gesù», ma che nel contempo lo caratterizza nella sua singolarità credente (dalla Postfazione di Claudio Doglio).Gesù cresce a Nazareth, ma non sappiamo nulla della sua vita presso quella città; c’è soltanto un piccolo spiraglio: quando ebbe 12 anni Maria e Giuseppe lo portarono a Gerusalemme e Gesù si “perse” nel tempio. Quello che vale per Gesù vale anche per Maria e per Giuseppe; non erano sconosciuti e nascosti, tuttavia l’identità vera di Gesù, come quella della madre e soprattutto del padre, rimane velata, tanto che, dopo lo “smarrimento” di Gesù nel tempio, Giuseppe scompare letteralmente, non se ne parla più nel vangelo, così da non sapere bene che fine abbia fatto. Il presente ebook cerca di dare parola al detto e al non detto circa la figura di Giuseppe per disegnarne un profilo sobrio e tuttavia denso di significato in rapporto alla ricerca evangelica, a quella extrabiblica e alla vita cristiana tutta.
