Il cattolicesimo, osserva Luca Scarlini, è il DNA italiano e la storia d’Italia è legata in modo inestricabile a quella della chiesa di Roma. O meglio: la storia della chiesa è a tutti gli effetti la storia d’Italia, visto che alla presenza del Vaticano si deve la peculiarissima situazione del Belpaese nelle vicende storiche e politiche e perfino nella geografia. Questo vale nei momenti di accordo con il corpo della nazione (non molti sul filo dei secoli), ma è soprattutto riscontrabile nelle infinite opposizioni, dai movimenti ereticali alle diatribe tra guelfi e ghibellini, dai venti forti della Riforma alle guerre nel Risorgimento, fino ai referendum su divorzio e aborto degli anni Settanta e ad altri più vicini momenti nevralgici. Il meccanismo è così sottile e complesso che lentamente è entrato in circolo, diventando la cosa ovvia, il giusto pensiero, il modo indiscutibile di agire: la lingua universale di uno stato che proprio non ce la fa, se non a prezzo di lotte spietate e per tempi brevi, a diventare laico.

In At the origin of the Christian claim Liugi Giussani examines Christ's "claim" to identify himself with the mystery that is the ultimate answer to our search for the meaning of existence. Giussani argues that if we accept the hypothesis that the mystery entered the realm of human existence and spoke in human terms, the relationship between the individual and God is no longer based on a moral, imaginative or aesthetic human effort but instead on coming upon an event in one's life. Thus the religious method is overturned by Christ; in Christianity it is no longer the person who seeks to know the mystery but the mystery that makes himself known by entering history. At the origin of the Christian claim presents an intriguing argument supported with ample documentation from the gospels and other theological writing.
