Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics - Business economics, Economic Pedagogy, grade: 1,7, Cologne University of Applied Sciences (Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften), course: Cross Cultural Competence, language: English, abstract: Presentations are ways of communicating ideas and information to a group. Presentation skills and public speaking skills are very useful in many aspects of work and life, may they be in business, sales and selling, training, teaching, lecturing and generally entertaining an audience. Developing the confidence and capability to give good presentations, and to stand up in front of an audience and speak well, are also extremely helpful competencies for self‐development. Even if the formats and purposes of presentations vary significantly, for example: oral (spoken), multimedia (using various media, visuals, audio, etc), PowerPoint presentations, short impromptu presentations, long planned presentations, educational or training sessions, lectures, or simply giving a talk on a subject to a group on a voluntary basis for pleasure, all successful presentations will generally use the essential techniques and structures explained here. Aside from presentation, technique, confidence, experience and preparation are key factors. This paper will give you a good overview of key presentation and public speaking elements, aspects to consider while preparing and useful pointers for the final delivery. In the second part I will touch on the subject of speaking to an international audience while the final segment will touch on the importance of presentation and public speaking skills in today’s business world.

Fact: most people would rather die than present in public. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 75% of people rank fear of speaking in public as their number-one fear. In second place: death. For many people, presenting arouses fear of failure, of forgetting their content, of appearing nervous, of being ignored or judged by their audience, of encountering the unexpected, of technology, of going on too long or drying up. And too many presentations are lifeless, pointless and go on far too long. Yet the ability to stand up and give a presentation, a speech, a lesson or a toast in a way that captures your audience's attention and actually makes them think, feel or do something as a result is one of the most effective ways to stand out at work and in life. This book is a shortcut to making you shine on stage when you are under the spotlight or presenting on screen. It is a supremely practical guide to giving presentations that will take away the fear factor by providing the tips, techniques and tools to create and deliver presentations you'll enjoy giving and your audience will want to hear. Think of it as a friendly and experienced coach who can help you focus on the things that really make the difference in presenting so you can project the real you to the world in a way that feels comfortable and smart. The Work Smarter series: Our books provide shortcuts, tips and life-hacks for the development of essential business skills. The books bring together accomplished industry experts who have learned their trades at the coalface. They teach the skills ambitious businesspeople need in order to tip the playing field in their favour. It is the pirate equivalent of business advice; the antidote to conventional wisdom; 'smarter' practice over 'best practice'.

A practical, readable guide to delivering superior presentations Speakers bear the responsibility for communicating effectively with their audience: presenting a clear message, supporting it with well-structured explanations and examples, and delivering it with ease, grace, and good visuals. Unfortunately, this rarely happens, as anyone who has endured a substandard presentation knows only too well. The key for developing sound presentation skills need not, however, remain hidden. The Short Road to Great Presentations demystifies the art of public speaking as it shows you how to master the critical principles to make this skill an invaluable asset of your life and career. Drawing on twenty years of experience in helping engineers, scientists, and business people develop powerful communication skills, PERC Communications founders Peter and Cheryl Reimold present an easy-to-follow program for crafting winning presentations. They focus on two principles: 1) find a message that is clearly meaningful and accessible to your audience, and 2) connect strongly with your audience throughout your presentation. In applying these principles to a series of step-by-step preparations and on-stage actions, the authors help speakers focus on their most vital content, strengthen their structure and delivery, andâ??perhaps, most importantâ??eliminate stress and aggravation. Chapter topics in this reader-friendly guide include: Structuring your message for maximum effect Preparing effective visuals Understanding and using body language and eye contact Handling tough questions and surprises Making smart use of slide shows and presentation software Conducting Web presentations and Web meetings Timeless speaking tips are combined with up-to-date primers on the latest technology throughout. The Short Road to Great Presentations is a one-stop resource for learning and practicing superior professional communication.
