This volume contains papers and discussions of the Vlth Dialyse-Arzte Workshop, which was held in Bernried at Lake Starnberg near Munich the 5th and 6th of March 1980. Generous ly sponsored by Travenol, Munich, the Dialyse-Arzte meetings now have a tradition spanning 16 years. According to the con stitution of these meetings, the topics of earlier years had to cover dialysis and related fields. Thus the sponsor requested that this year also one lecture - incorporated here as part - should deal with the state of art of dialysis, thereby hopefully linking this Workshop to the previous meetings. Dialysis techniques of the 1960s, pioneered by many of attend ing speakers and panelists (see List of Contributors), have never come to a standstill. Indeed, vascular access and extra corporeal circulation have become routine for the nephrologist and have made possible the introductimn of new approaches, such as hemofiltration and hemoperfusion. Also today new membrane technologies provide us with a potentially even more effective therapeutic tool, namely plasma separation.

This work is a valuable contribution to the subject of picture-writing. Anthropology and the Humanities might seem coextensive, yet they divide the domain of human culture among them in practice. The types of human culture are reducible to two, a simpler and a more complicated, or a lower and a higher. By set convention, Anthropology occupies itself solely with the simpler or lower kind of culture. On the other hand, the Humanities focus on whatever is most integral and typical of the higher life of society. Six influential personalities delivered these six lectures during the Michaelmas Term of 1908 at the Committee for Anthropology, which from the beginning of its career has kept steadily in view the need of persuading classical scholars to examine the lower culture as it bears upon the higher. Contents: The European Diffusion of Primitive Pictography and its Bearings on the Origin of Script by A. J. Evans Homer and Anthropology. by A. Lang The Early Greek Epic. By G. G. A. Murray Graeco-Italian Magic. By F. B. Jevons Herodotus and Anthropology. By J. L. Myres Lustratio. By W. W. Fowler

This volume aspires to be useful to experts in Tibetan art, to art historians wishing to integrate Tibetan subjects into their teaching and to the growing body of amateur admirers of Tibetan thankas. In 1984, when Pratapaditya Pal wrote his ground breaking book 'Tibetan Painting', probably fewer than 50 of these 11th-14th century Tibetan paintings on cloth were known. Since then over 300 early thankas have appeared. These works provide a plethora of new data for the art historian, and their study has transformed our understanding of their iconography and chronology.

The Tenth Karmapa (1604&– 1674) lived through dramatic changes in Tibet, including the rise to political supremacy of the Fifth Dalai Lama and the Gelug sect following a Mongol invasion. Regarded as a remarkable bodhisattva and artist, the Karmapa has largely escaped the close attention of modern scholars. In this book, Shamar Rinpoche, the Fourteenth Shamarpa, introduces the Tenth Karmapa through his translations of the Karmapa' s autobiographical writings and an eighteenth century biography of him. As a direct lineage-descendant from the Sixth Shamarpa— the Karmapa' s guru— the Shamar Rinpoche shares his unique knowledge and experience through extensive annotations and a historical overview of Tibet from the thirteenth through seventeenth century. The text of A Golden Swan in Turbulent Waters: The Life and Times of the Tenth Karmapa Choying Dorje is complemented by maps and color illustrations depicting places where the Karmapa lived and his prolific artistic work, with some object images being published for the first time.
