Kate arrived in Los Angeles at the turn of the millennium, a hopeful and ambitious Seven Sisters graduate eager to make a mark in the fashion industry. Her journey began at American Apparel, a hip and rising brand of the era. It was here that Kate, once a starry-eyed novice, first witnessed the harsh realities of the industry. The initial promise of sex-positivity and feminist ideals soon disintegrated, revealing a more sinister and exploitative landscape beneath the veneer of liberation. Her experiences at American Apparel, once a dream job, became the foundation for her unwavering commitment to changing the fashion industry. Aided by the resilience instilled in her by her Seven Sisters education and driven by her unwavering feminist ideals, Kate found her voice. It was a voice that not only challenged but shattered the status quo, sparking a profound change in the fashion industry. Kate's journey was far from easy. From the criticisms and backlashes to the public character assassinations, every step was a battle. Yet, with every challenge, Kate rose stronger, more determined, and more influential. Her resolve to fight for fair and ethical practices resonated with many, gradually shifting the tide of public opinion. Kate's fight was not hers alone. This volume interrogates what "global" means in the context of "communication," and who benefits from global communication practices and industries. Emerging scholars contribute their unique perspectives in communication scholarship, charting innovative directions for research that connects empirical evidence with pressing questions of social significance. This critical reflection leads to considering problems that result from the way global communication becomes mobilized, in the practice of journalism and development as well as the ICT industry. Global Communication defines the term "globalization," through understanding the cultural geography of global, regional, national, and local media. Critical evaluations of media production, distribution, and consumption practices, within cultural contexts, offer insights into how people "mediate" the global. Chapters draw attention to communications in Latin America, the Arab World, and South Asia, complicating territorial boundaries and exploring how local audience and industry practices work within global as well as local configurations.

"If ever a subject has been overexposed in our mass media, it is the contemporary unrest of the younger generation. Yet beyond the psychedelic art-nouveau spreads, behind the beads and the beards, lies a profound malaise, and not all or even most of it is in the hearts of the visibly disaffected. Many Americans, with the war in Vietnam on one hand and the crises in the cities on the other, are yearning, discomfited, aware that there are desperate dangers and new challenges. Yet most of us, surveying the scene, in the words of Bob Dylan 'don't know what it is.' In this book Jesse Kornbluth, Harvard '68, takes us on a skillfully guided tour, introducing, editing, and annotating a valuable book that might be called a king of Federalist papers of the New Revolution..." - Book Jacket.

The authors explore the origins and uses of the aura of glamour and trace its history and power as a language of visual seduction.

The Culture Of History written by Billie Melman and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-22 with History categories.

In this original and widely researched book, Billie Melman explores the culture of history during the age of modernity. Her book is about the production of English pasts, the multiplicity of their representations and the myriad ways in which the English looked at history (sometimes in the most literal sense of 'looking') and made use of it in a social and material urban world, and in their imagination. Covering the period between the Napoleonic Wars and the Coronation of 1953, Melman recoups the work of antiquarians, historians, novelists and publishers, wax modellers, cartoonists and illustrators, painters, playwrights and actors, reformers and educationalists, film stars and their fans, musicians and composers, opera-fans, and radio listeners. Avoiding a separation between 'high' and 'low' culture, Melman analyses nineteenth-century plebeian culture and twentieth-century mass-culture and their venues - like Madame Tussaud's Chamber of Horrors, panoramas, national monuments like the Tower of London, and films - as well as studying forms of 'minority' art - notably opera. She demonstrates how history was produced and how it circulated from texts, visual images, and sounds, to people and places and back to a variety of texts and images. While paying attention to individuals' making-do with culture, Melman considers constrictions of class, gender, the state, and the market-place on the consumption of history. Focusing on two privileged pasts, the Tudor monarchy and the French Revolution, the latter seen as an English event and as the framework for narrating and comprehending history, Melman shows that during the nineteenth century, the most popular, longest-enduring, and most highly commercialized images of the past represented it not as cosy and secure, but rather as dangerous, disorderly, and violent. The past was also imagined as an urban place, rather than as rural. In Melman's account, City not green Country, is the centre of a popular version of the past whose central Images are the dungeon, the gallows, and the guillotine.
